Deferential, glad to be of use,
Politic, cautious, and meticulous;
Full of high sentence, but a bit obtuse;
At times, indeed, almost ridiculous—

This is John Roberts' America.
The blatant selling of pardons is perhaps the clearest instance of criminal conduct authorized by SCOTUS. Pardons are a quintessential "official act." So, even when Trump takes a bribe to issue one, he is presumably above the criminal law.
The president’s own chief of staff was reportedly stunned by his pardon of a former Honduran president.

genuine progressives would dismantle the system that funnels wealth into a few ultra-rich pockets, so nothing. expect zero help on that front
I want to ask the flipside question: what will it take for wealthy progressives to fund the infrastructure and entities needed to identify, support, and sustain emerging voices on *our* side of the aisle?
Anti-trans demagogue and fifth place swimmer Riley Gaines earned $470,000+ last year from a conservative non-profit.

Notably, $420k was incentive-based.

A neat little window into the way the transphobic grift is being compensated.

I wonder what the per-post rate is?

honestly, “it’s because they’re still mad about the New Deal” is a pretty good guiding hypothesis for a lot of stuff
The standard story was that 1950s religious revivals were about contrasting America with the godless commies of the USSR, but I found material that hinted at an older well funded campaign that reframed the revival as a corporate pushback against the New Deal.

So I followed that unexpected thread!

i really do believe the push for AI is purely ideological. a hatred of human beings and human creativity. these CEOs admit point blank that it hasn't made workflow more efficient. it's not profitable. the backlash is certainly bad for marketing and will hurt sales. they don't care.

click through the stack of quote posts, all correct and well said, but the only thing I'll add on top is inviting people to consider who benefits from academic citations collapsing under distrust, ex. the people wrecking our healthcare system, climate science, accurate understanding of history, etc.
Another way of putting this: AI is basically setting off a nuclear explosion over academic citation by injecting distrust into a system built on trust.
To clear the air here, because I am getting a lot of questions and feedback on this, we are cooked. Here is why:

The name "Popular Science" doesn't mean we shift our coverage depending on public opinion. It means we cover relevant subjects that are rigorously researched, reliable, and grounded in reality.

And trans lives are grounded in reality.

We see y'all. No matter what.

First-of-a-kind study shows encouraging data for trans kids who socially transition
Ninety-four percent of participants in a new study stood firm in their trans identity after five years, and "detransitioning" is rare.

The system that created Epstein, protected him, and let him thrive for decades, still exists. His market of powerful monsters still exists, and they're still being protected.

There is definitely, right now, someone serving the same role he did, being protected the same way by the same people.

Democrats trying to shift the responsibility for the party's electoral outcomes away from the powerful, well-financed party and onto the general disorganized public is not only feckless it's also a plan to lose election after election without it affecting anybody with power within the party
im sorry if your fucking political party depends on message discipline from random anarchist artists on niche microblogging websites you should probably go to them and tell them to get their shit together because you are not ever getting that

Man I remember Malheur so well. Such a clear signal of what was to come. Some of the most privileged & entitled white men in the f'ing world engaging in open lawlessness in the name of their own imagined victimhood ...

... and getting away with it.

That's the true American template.

The ban in New Zealand was the result of a far right coalition party demanding it, not because of medical authorities implementing one. It's political but Azeen never mentions that context. The goal of this framing is to normalize bans to readers as if they're good faith rather than political.

One reason the NYT has burned its credibility with trans people is that they still cite the discredited Cass report in reporting on trans healthcare. Never the German, Utah, or other systematic reviews supporting care. They also never provide the political context behind restrictions in care.
