As an advocate for dark skies …. This is not the right way to do it. There should be no facilities and no lights. 🔭🧪

19% of peer reviewers in a Wiley (🥴) survey “said they have used LLMs to ‘increase the speed + ease’ of their reviews.” Meanwhile, some authors are using “indirect prompt injection, which involves inserting hidden white text or other manipulated fonts that tell AI tools to give a… paper 👍 reviews…”
AI-Enabled Cheating Points to ‘Untenable’ Peer Review System
It’s not clear how widespread the new cheating strategy is, but it’s highlighting longstanding drivers of the peer review crisis some reviewers are now trying to alleviate with AI.

The bass player of TMBG, Danny Weinkauf, is wearing a shirt with a trans flag and says Gender Affirming Care Saves Lives.

I didn’t think it was possible to love TMBG any more than I already do, but here we are.

Say it after me: Chat GPT is not a search engine. It does not scan the web for information, it just generates statistically likely sentences. You cannot use it a search engine, or as a substitute for searching.

Now. Please never use an LLM for information searches ever again.

The most important thing you can do is visibly do things that make sense for you and who you are and where your skills and capabilities lie.

If someone sees you, they will think "oh, it's okay, I'm not alone."

This is one of the most beautiful space images I have ever seen
Did you know Jupiter has rings?

You can see them, faintly, in this infrared image from #JWST.

The giant planet's aurorae (at both poles) are also clearly visible, as are a few of its irregular, inner moons (the largest of which, Amalthea, is at the far left).

This is the time of year to see the trout lilies sending their stark white rhizomes out into the world, arching over the forest floor. They'll be gone in a month or so. Maple Grove this morning.

Major good news for my transmasculine readers.

The Washington State Democrats have informed me that the bill will cover 6-month supply stockpiles of testosterone as well.

They were unable to get 12-month supply stockpiles due to its controlled status, but it WAS upgraded from 3 to 6 months.
1. A major bill protecting trans people just passed in Washington.

It makes insurers cover 12-month supplies of HRT which can be obtained at pharmacies, allowing trans people to stockpile medication to outlast supply disruptions.

I saw advice to buy extra cans of food when you’re at the grocery store to donate to the food bank.

I want to politely nudge you to give the money directly to food banks (or to mutual aid groups if you know of any).

We can usually stretch a dollar farther than a dollar’s worth of canned goods

The university has pulled down DEI websites at several colleges and plans to dissolve DEI committees at its medical school.
Philly elected officials say Penn’s removal of DEI websites ceded ground to Trump
Penn President Larry Jameson has said that the school must “embrace diversity in all its forms” while following the law. Philadelphia Democratic officials are skeptical of the school's commitment.

Ooh, I just found a fabulous slide show that shows the evolution of the male American Goldfinch plumage through all the months of the year. I wanted to confirm that the bird I saw was a male in winter plumage (it is), and David Sibley, of course, had all the info! So useful. I love my Sibley.

For anyone else in this position, Please never underestimate the usefulness of annoying the shit out of govt officials, organizing meal trains, being the support person who stays home to be jail support during protests etc etc. I know Gwen knows. Lot of y'all still can learn to help.
There are a lot of us who are not well-positioned for street activism (in my case, I can't risk detainment because my youngest still mostly depends on breast milk for calories), and discounting work that can be done on digital space isn't just inaccurate, it's shaming of vulnerable people
I have a client stewing in shame about not doing enough to counter anti-trans and fascist actions, paralyzing himself by saying that no action is good enough except for the one he is too socially anxious to do.

For some, sending words might be a small risk that builds momentum for further action.
