I think "elite panic" is a key term for understanding the 21st century.

In a catastrophe, the top priority for ordinary people is relieving suffering. The top priority for powerful people is asserting control.

Every single time a young republican gets famous for being unfairly judged you look at what they did and it's always them being utterly fucking mediocre.

It's always them being embarrassingly shit at something and then pissing and moaning about being expected to have met any standards.

I'd also argue that libraries, and the digital equivalents that deal with older works (like Project Gutenberg), can let you encounter stuff you never would have otherwise encountered, instead of algorithmic spoon-feeding nonsense.
The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.

This also goes for *making* art. Telling the A.I. computer “Make a picture of [whatever]” eliminates the opportunity to make discoveries along the way.

rich dudes got freakier after butlers fell out of fashion, like say what you will about having domestic servants but clearly it was some sort of moderating force on old rich dudes having a fancy man follow you around saying shit like "oh dear sir, that wouldn't be very becoming"

This is why creators and consumers hate AI.
It drowns out humor efforts by sheer mass, they are often low quality slop, and THERE IS NO WHERE TO ESCAPE THEM.

every formerly human creative endeavor is being inundated by plagiarism box output, leaving us to shovel shit to find human creation.
Nearly every single day I have games like this clogging up my inboxes, and it's such a time wasting endeavour, as I have to sort through and filter out all the AI generated shovelware, and it just won't stop. No matter how clear I am that I am not interested in AI slopware, it keeps coming.

The "Larry Summers complained to Jeffrey Epstein that MeToo went too far" and "Olivia Nuzzi committed crimes on behalf of the fascist she masturbated with while reporting on him" are the same story: American elites have no ideology other than "I should be untouchable." Society is run by empty husks

The guy shot two random people with a gun, I don't think you can say he wasn't assimilating into our culture
Stephen Miller is now arguing that assimilation is fundamentally impossible and that certain cultures are not compatible with Western civilization

Any workplace that has employees working 36 hour shifts has an utterly failed management chain.

I haven't experienced any downgrades to performance for Baldur's Gate 3 in Linux compared to Windows 11. Just needed to manually set the correct graphics card.

This is kinda funny because that's my most resource-intensive game and I'm not even using a Linux version meant for gaming!

what i love is that in 1990 judas priest got brought to trial over the claim that subliminal messages in the recording "better by you better than me" caused two suicides and now in 2025 openai seems to be generating a suicide a week with its superliminal messages and the US government is funding it

Hey, look at this weird gargoyle from my town, isn't it neat? Supposedly it depicts a monkey that rescued a baby from a burning building, or so the stories go. I love this little guy.

AI kind of feels like the endgame of this bit Graeber described in the original Bullshit Jobs essay: these people have been so thoroughly cleaved from any sense of purpose that they resent those who have one. They hate artists for their skill and think poverty should be the price of having a calling
