one of the most deeply infuriating aspects of american politics is close to half of americans would love if 20% of the country starved to death

“…we are in the process of the second American Revolution, which will remain bloodless if the left allows it to be.”

Kevin Roberts president, Heritage Foundation, July 2024
In their own words the Republicans declared war against the United States and now they are waging it.
I guess we should have taken "The South will rise again" both literally and seriously.

1. Just so we’re clear, this is the clip that got Jimmy Kimmel’s show shelved by ABC.

If I’m missing any other clips please let me know.

Don’t trust the experts”? That’s not democracy, that’s recklessness.

On a plane, I want a pilot.
In a hospital, I want doctors and scientists who understand the evidence.

Expertise isn’t religion or authoritarianism — it’s training, accountability, and data.

Ignore it and we all pay the price.
RFK Jr: We need to stop trusting the experts... Trusting the experts is not a feature of science or democracy, it's a feature of religion and totalitarianism.

Not sure if trans Bluesky had analyzed the possibility, but perhaps, the Minnesota shooter had detransitioned owing to the far-right?

90%(!) cuts at the National Park Service to maintain DC parks.

Now it's National Guard solides doing the work, who aren't exactly cheaper.

Another DOGE "cut" that is anything but
National Guard soldiers called into service for President Trump's law enforcement surge in D.C. have been assigned to spread mulch at federal monuments.

Normally the Park Service does that, but the administration laid off the workers.

For folks not in DC:
- There are full-on police checkpoints most nights
- Gangs of 30+ federal agents roam DC
- National Guard folks w/ guns patrolling a Harris Teeter
- Every day, multiple friends see ICE kidnapping ppl
- Daycares are scared to have kids go on walks due to ICE

It's not deportation if a person is not from there.

Involuntarily moving someone to another country is human trafficking and every bureaucrat involved should be prosecuted.
All of this is performative cruelty directed solely to avoid admitting they fucked up when they illegally sent him to cecot in March.

This article is so clear eyed. I just wish all journalists would be this clear.
I loved @vermontgmg.bsky.social's latest piece so much that I asked if I could republish it on The Handbasket and he so generously said yes.

If you haven't read it yet, please do. It's essential:

Words/phrases Democrats should never use:

* bipartisan
* my Republican friends
* real, valid, legitimate, serious, important (to describe issue raised by Republicans)
* yea (when voting on Republican bills)
* distraction (to describe bad thing Republicans did)
* woke (in derogatory sense)

The president of the United States, wearing a novelty hat that says he’s always right and sitting next to the World Cup trophy he stole, insists that “African American ladies, beautiful ladies” are demanding he invade Chicago with the military.
Trump: After we do this, we will go to another location and make it safe too. Chicago is a mess. That will probably be our next one after this. They are screaming for us to come. African American ladies, beautiful ladies are saying "Please President Trump, come to Chicago, please."

This is legitimately unhinged. How are you going to argue that the US is a free country and also argue that *25 year olds* are too young to have bodily autonomy?!? I don’t think I’ll ever be able to respect anyone who thinks this man should be president.
Gavin Newsom suggesting that 25 years of age is too young to transition and agreeing to right-wing entryism of concern trolling about trans people in sports. This is your opposition leader?

I will never vote for Gavin Newsom anyone who thinks trans people are actual humans will follow suit.

FWIW, "yours for the restoration of the Republic" was a common salutation American fascists gave to each other in the 1950s and 1960s. This is from a 1952 letter by Ohio white supremacist terrorist Peter Xavier. The rest of the rhetoric here might be familiar too.

Trump already tried once to cling to power via fraud and violence. Everything he has done over the past six months virtually screams that he will do the same thing again, but with far more planning and preparation.
i am far from an alarmist but i have been operating under this assumption since he won. it’s why i thought that he should have been asked, at some point, whether he intended to leave office on january 20, 2029.
You can think what you want, but from where I sit there is no indication Trump intends on giving up power in 2028, and we should just assume he’s not.

The President expresses his intention to deploy the military to occupy Chicago.
Trump on DC: "We haven't had to bring in the regular military, which we're willing to do if we have to. And after we do this, we'll go to another location and we'll make it safe also ... Chicago is a mess. And we'll straighten that one out probably next"

We talked about this back when the first trial for lenacapavir first said the magic words everyone wants to hear, "halted for efficacy"(*), so a recap: this is not a vaccine or a treatment. It's PrEP aka "pre-exposure prophylaxis": you take the drug so if exposed to the virus, you will not catch it.
If you were alive in the 1980s, this is among the most wonderful & truly incredible things you have ever witnessed in your lifetime.

one question to ask the editorial board is whether there is a minimum bar for what constitutes "american democracy." if most people in most states are gerrymandered out of effective political representation, is that democracy?

One of the biggest blunders (when well-intentioned) and betrayals (when not) in Democratic rhetoric over the years is their impenetrable insistence that what voters respond to is somebody who begins by finding common ground with their opponent, no matter who that opponent is or what that ground is.

Gotta give people who have despaired something to register for. Promise consequences and severe ones. Promise no bipartisanship or common ground. Promise a never-ending string of impeachments and expulsions, prosecutions and convictions. Promise to abolish and punish ICE. Make it believable.
You don’t have to be a big fan of the Democratic Party to recognize that this Republican boom is an extreme catastrophe in the age of Trump.

If Democratic politicians do not fight this because it's a "distraction," it will simply happen. They need to get in front of every mic and say that we will not allow Trump to destroy American history. He wants a culture war? GIVE HIM ONE. There are no distractions. Have every fight.
