Gas stations in Ukraine have become wartime hubs—fueling generators during blackouts, serving as handoff points for volunteers, and marking the front line itself. “As long as the gas station stands, it means it’s still under Ukrainian control…a pillar of hope.” www.nytimes.com/2025/09/23/w...

Canada has borne the brunt of the damage from US tariffs so far, with its long-run economy -2.1% smaller in real terms. China’s economy is -0.2% smaller, about 1/2 as large as the hit to the US. The UK’s is 0.2% bigger thanks in part to the benefits of US-UK trade deal.

The EU-US trade deal is here - it's probably not the end of uncertainty as the details are ironed out, but it's a momentous deal. In sum, it's a political defeat for the EU, but in economic terms I see it as, under the circumstances, a win of sorts. 🧵

People often complain that Democrats are “bringing knives to a gun fight.”

But that’s not quite it, they’re bringing facts to a storytelling fight. And getting totally outspun.
Voters vulnerable to Medicaid cuts in President Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” law are reluctant to blame the president or congressional Republicans who approved it, instead directing their frustration at their hospital system.
A clinic blames its closing on Trump’s Medicaid cuts. Patients don’t buy it.
A clinic in rural Nebraska has become a political flash point after tying its looming closure to Trump’s law cutting Medicaid.

But the birch trees he relies on are dying and the bark is no longer usable.

Labrador has just enough bark left from last year to build one final Mi’kmaw birchbark canoe.

Gemelli with Anchovies, Tomatoes and Mascarpone
Quick, simple and — much as I hate the word — tasty. I know no self-respecting Italian would let tomato seeds sully a sauce, but I do so very happily, and it’s the gloop inside the halved cherry tomat...

Canada's crude oil shift to China schools Trump in unintended consequences: Russell
If there is a law of unintended consequences, then a good example is how commodity markets are adjusting to both the realities and the perceived threats of the tariff war launched by U.S. President Donald Trump.
