As someone currently in the rewrite, craft, polish final stages of thesis writing, this. Also - Bender and Hanna's book 'The AI Con' is excellent and a great argument for the enduring value of longform writing. It's starting to feel like reading is becoming an act of resistance against AI.
There's this fundamental mismatch in what AI people seem to think research is. As if you have a kernel of an idea and one needs the right re-combination of tokens to have some kind of insight.

Research should be surprising, thought-provoking, (re-)discovering new literatures and subcommunities.

I have never in 3 decades in higher education worked for an organization who did an evaluation of their software needs before purchasing extremely expensive software that the sales team promised would fix all their problems.
We're on six supplemental systems at this point doing the things it can't.
Its the ease with which universities have suddenly the money to pay for AI subscriptions, AI professorships, AI workshops, AI everything while they reassure us that "there is no money" to pay grad students and precarious faculty living wages.
Can you imagine if the loudest voices in higher ed actually stopped to critically evaluate whether so-called "AI" tools are worth the documented and likely-but-not-yet-well-documented effects of their use?

Instead of being AI triumphalist, remembering that tech vendors are not our friends/saviors?

Always telling people to compromise by giving up what's right; never telling people to compromise by giving up what's wrong
I would really really genuinely love one of these lectures just one time to be aim that centrists and wavering right wingers telling them to put aside their impatience with pronouns and loud denunciations to do what needs to be done.

It struck a chord because it's true. As I write in More Than Words, the chief benefit of LLMs to writing (and teaching writing) is it forces us to examine what we value in writing. We should be building statues of the students who remain proud to be themselves & encourage others to join them.
Here’s an observation that’s closing in on 80k likes on twitter:

I cannot stress enough that it is possible to govern well, and to do so in a manner that is broadly accretive.
New Mexico made childcare free. It lifted 120,000 people above the poverty line
The state, which has long ranked worst in the US for child wellbeing, became the first and only in the country to offer free childcare to a majority of families

I spoke to another person this week—also a US-born citizen—who showed me the DHS email she received informing her that she had to leave the country. Incompetent, evil or both?
Some personal news: the Department of Homeland Security has given me, an immigration lawyer born in Newton, Massachusetts, seven days to leave the U.S. Does anyone know if you can get Italian citizenship through great-grandparents?

True fact.

I was fully vaxed as a kid in the 70s. Recent test showed I was no longer immune.

Fixed that last week.
MEASLES

PS I've begun saying this ⬇️ to every adult I see with whom I have even the most passing acquaintance and the vast, vast, VAST majority of them had no idea that immunity can lapse or that there's a test.

Tell your friends, loved ones, co-workers, neighbors, running club, hair dresser, etc!
🧵MEASLES

If you're ~40+ pls pls talk to a healthcare provider about a titers test to asses your immunity to measles.

There are several reasons that your immunity may have lapsed; if it has, you can get an MMR booster.

You're doing this for you AND for everyone who's immunocompromised & can't.

hi, cis folks!

the comment period for the proposed rule to remove trans care from the ACA as an essential health benefit is open til april 11. it'd strip care from DACA recipients, too.

context & guidance in the thread. do it while you’re still fired up from/about protests.

only 4.5 days left!
hi, cis folks!

if we *are* going to talk ACA, RFK's HHS proposed a rule to remove *all trans care* from ACA essential health benefit status.

~25mil people are insured by ACA & if 1% are trans, that's 250,000 people who'd lose access to care.

that's bad! take 2 minutes to stand with trans people.🧵

My wife works in a college writing center. She helps students go over their papers and make them better.
They just recently put into place a policy where they check the links to the sources cited. If they aren’t real, they don’t read the paper and send an email explaining why they don’t read AI.
