Stopping deportations at no expense to the government since 2013
It's funny how the proclamation text directly contradicts what the administration is actually implementing right now. H-1Bs won't face travel bans and steep costs until next year.

Looks like someone in the Trump admin missed Proclamation Writing 101.

If you are currently abroad and on a valid H-1b visa, starting Sunday you'll be barred from re-entering the U.S. - unless you or your employer pay $100,000 to the U.S. government.

This de facto travel ban will cause chaos throughout tech and the entire economy.

Trump wants to increase the cost of an H-1b by $100,000 - making it way too expensive for most U.S. companies to ever hire a foreign worker. If this is real, expect top talent in science, tech, and other fields to find jobs and do research outside the United States.

Now basically anyone who came to the U.S. across the border, will not be released from ICE custody while their case is pending. This is a radical change from 29 years of how everyone agreed the law worked and will keep ICE detention centers full.

A few days ago, DHS issued a secret new policy memo that attempts to keep (almost) everyone in ICE custody from having a bond hearing. If this works, almost no one will be released from custody while their case is pending. This is how mass deportations begin.

US launches new bid to keep migrants detained by denying hearings, memo shows
The Trump administration is launching a new effort to keep immigrants who entered the U.S. illegally detained by denying them bond hearings, an internal memo showed, a change that could further swell the numbers of those held.

This was sent to my client who will never have $1.8 million to pay this absurd fine. She's never been arrested & is the mother of 2 US citizen children (one with serious health issues). She is also eligible for a visa based on severe human trafficking. This is who DHS is prioritizing right now.
I was theoretically aware that the Trump admin has been imposing fines of $998/day for people who overstayed their removal orders, but hadn't seen it until today. As in so many other Trump/Miller immigration policies, these massive penalties are (arguably) legal but rarely done before

After this vote, everyone will see a stronger ICE presence in our neighborhoods and in our daily lives - affecting both immigrants and citizens alike. Let’s keep showing up for one another and standing strong with our immigrant communities. We’re in this together.
With this vote, Congress makes ICE the highest-funded federal law enforcement agency in history, with more money per year at its disposal over the next four years than the budgets of the FBI, DEA, ATF, US Marshals, and Bureau of Prisons combined.
🚨🚨 NEW: House passes sprawling domestic policy bill, sending it to Trump's desk

Final House vote is 218-214, with TWO Rs voting no (Massie & Fitzpatrick).

Senate passed it 51-50.

Existing foreign students must transfer or risk losing their legal status, DHS said.

There is no better way to start your day as an immigration attorney than by being there when someone is granted asylum after years of working together. There is just nothing like that moment when they realize that they are truly finally safe.

Good things are still happening!

My youngest ever unaccompanied minor client was only three years old when his case began. Children who are alone in immigration court need legal representation.
The parties included a 7, 8, and 4-year-old.

"None of the children were accompanied by parents or attorneys."

"The 4-year-old girl in the tie-dye shirt raised her hand, dangling her pink plushy above her head. It wasn’t clear – was she responding to the question, or just playing with her toy?"
