My emotionally abusive mother sensed that I was upset with her and asked why... so, I told her. "You constantly invalidate my feelings. You'll say you'll stop and you don't. I haven't seen any efforts to change."

Of course, she tried to rebuke with, "Well I'm upset at YOU because you [excusehere]!"

The primary antidote to despair that I've found is getting engaged in local organizing and volunteering.

Find a group doing work you care about in your area - homeless advocacy and outreach, immigrant support, queer rights - and volunteer with them.

It's a tremendous counter to helpless despair.
What do you suggest though? It's all very well saying "Don't let them win" but it's not like people have a little switch in their brains they can just flip from Despair to Hope.

"Don't speak ill of the dead" being made into an unbreakable commandment by a culture that has done so much to shame away and erase any connection to ancestors in the cultures it oppresses is absolutely infuriating.

Reminder that feeding your cats raw food at this time is NOT safe. The speed at which cats go from a light fever to dying of pneumonia or neurological symptoms is just a few DAYS.

I lost 2 cats to this in March and had around 20k in medical bills to save 2 others who were hospitalized.

When I was little, the U.S. military came to our home at gunpoint and took me and my family away. We were imprisoned for years in barbed wire camps simply because we were Japanese American. I have spent my life telling that story, hoping it would never be repeated.

YES. Because even when we do everything exactly according to what people SAY they want, a great deal of the time there's some unspoken ideas that we DON'T know about and people notice us most when we flub those!

It's just so wild that "because I don't wanna get sick" is something that needs to be explained, as if it's so unreasonable to not want to get sick.

I've been living within my mother's hoard for 2 years... In one of her spare rooms, surrounded by her boxes, that are literally stacked to the ceiling.

After 2 years, I finally have a room that's all my own again. Not a single object in here is hers, I have space to move and walk... I could cry.

It's the time of year when I see articles telling folks to put pet fur out for bird nesting. The Cornell ornithology lab does not recommend this! Flea/tick treatments & shampoos can be toxic, long fur can entangle chicks, etc. There are much better alternatives: www.allaboutbirds.org/news/providi...

He was not dead.

“Dead” Ned Johnson turns out to be very much alive. It took him weeks to convince the system he was breathing and to start clawing his benefits back.

The difference between a millionaire and a billionaire is mind-boggling in a way that most people don’t realize or can’t fully comprehend. Nobody should be a billionaire.
Imagine your life gets expensive as hell, inflation or disaster or medical crisis etc.

Suddenly it costs $1,000 a day to not die.

28% of Americans have less than that in savings. They'd die in 1 day.

A millionaire could last 2.73 years.

A billionaire could survive that for 2,730 years.

If fentanyl gets changed to Schedule I like HR 21 is proposing, healthcare will come to a catastrophic screeching halt. I really need someone who isn't just me to be screaming about this. I cannot emphasize how bad it would be. Worse than COVID and avian flu combined.
