Amazing piece. US tinted glasses, Japan has a been ideal ally and perfect for a shakedown. My guess is an unfavourable deal for Japan will send a signal where others will be more hesitant to negotiate.
As more details about the US-Japan trade talks emerge, I think we're seeing what it looks like when the Trump administration tries to achieve a Mar-a-Lago accord-style deal with an ally.

“Actually US has done bad things before”

and

“You didn’t want people to vote for Kamala? Now enjoy Trump kidnapping random foreign university students”

Keep feeding each other
absolutely the most tedious take you can have on trump right now is "actually the US has done bad things before, and I am the only one smart enough to realize this." woe unto anyone who has a jacobin subscription.

India could really have 8% consistent growth for the Trump years if Modi stops protecting base (6 oligarchs and small biz hitlers) from foreign competition under guise of import substitution.
i love that we’re creating the tariff doomsday device. perimeter system but it just makes us 1% poorer
TRUMP SAYS HE HAS NO INTENTION OF CREATING EXEMPTIONS ON STEEL AND ALUMINUM TARIFFS || SAYS RECIPROCAL TARIFFS WILL HAPPEN ON APRIL 2 || SAYS HE WILL IMPOSE RECIPROCAL AND SECTORAL TARIFFS ON APRIL 2 TRUMP SAYS RECIPROCAL TARIFFS ON COUNTRIES WILL COME ALONG SIDE AUTO DUTIES

Still kind of crazy markets haven’t fully understood the consequences of this. Between the tariffs and potentially delaying/stopping payments, it could be nuclear for the economy.
I think today feels like a little bit of a tipping point in the Trump coverage, where the panic that's been flowing out of liberal circles for a week is starting to show up around the edges of mainstream media

I watched the Royal Rumble. I was all ready to talk about it. Probably the most unexpected result. Now it’s out of my mind because of the Luka trade.

A good Indian must hate all 3

1) Racist against Indians
2) Indian diaspora
3) Indians in India

I keep saying what’s missing from this site is main characters and crazy randos. We need the “I’m unsympathetic an alligator ate your child because of white privilege” before this site has the same juice as twitter.
for some reason i can’t bring myself to use this site exactly the way i used twitter (occasional serious thought, occasional deadpan bits) and instead i use it like neo-myspace:

“ophelia is… desiring an espresso martini xD”

No exaggeration but there are prisons around the world more lenient and less invasive than the premier institutions in India.

Genuinely any country where you read about “democratic backsliding” this is the main cause. People overestimate how much arresting dissenting journalists affects other journalists ability to tell the truth and underrate how much denial of access makes them desperate.
i really wish we had journalists willing to burn bridges to deliver the truth to the public, instead of just rank clientelism followed by publishing a book a year after the fact
probaably worth looking through the background of a bunch of project 2025 hires because like 30% of them are going to be literal nazis

Also good to remember every major dem donor hated her and Dems are only going to listen to donor and their consultants more after this election.
Please join me in a round of applause for Lina Khan, the best thing to come out of the Biden administration, and someone whom history will remember way more admirably than her contemporaries.

As someone who teaches FTC, anti trust etc, Lina Khan is an epochal figure.

Her actions will live long.

Honestly felt like Heat were the best team in the playoffs both in 2020 & 2022. 2020 more winnable if Bam and Dragic are healthy. 2022 they would have matched up better against Warriors than Celtics.

Irrespective of your politics if you view someone labelled as a “terrorist” as peak evil, you’re going to have a really bad understanding of any conflict. You’re the most gullible to the cheapest kind of propaganda.

Heard 4 Lakers podcasts today. My god, it feels to listen to all of them the day they lose.

A lot of people are imagining that everyone celebrating the death of health insurance CEO is some lefty. But it’s every single one of their actual customers

Yes, twitter before Musk was that. You need enough randos and enough annoying hateful people. Musk changed that to Hiterite racism, low quality Facebook videos and bible camp self help.
A platform without the underlying animosity you have for your fellow terminally online pals doesn’t have the same edge to it.

I still maintain he was the best player in the 2018 WCF series. Winning in 2018 would have completely changed the perception of Harden,CP and MDA.
I will forever maintain that Chris Paul is one of the greatest players in NBA history, and that his playoff reputation is mostly a byproduct of bad luck
Chris Paul has been so, so good for this team.

This is probably the best part of winter. Seeing dogs dressed in jackets and sleeping inside the auto. Like they are on their way to school.

I hate when shows come up with a really good story arc, something that’s going to take the show in a new direction and allow it to expand into new dimensions. In Succession Season 2, when Kendall does the press conference against his dad the story arc there could have been so compelling.

I really underestimated how much Bluetooth headphones make me productive in a way wired ones couldn’t. Really glad Apple pushed into a corner.

2024 Bluesky vs Twitter, feels a lot like Telegram vs Whatsapp in 2016. Telegram and Bluesky are way better products but network effects (randos and close friends using it) ensures I have to use twitter/X.

NBA season being 82 games is just too long. Physically the demand is so insane. A season that long means we are never going to get a good Embiid playoff series. Poorly conditioned athletes being punished is fair, but the season is just too long.
