My friends keep telling me my biggest problem is that I never listen.

No, I tell them, my biggest problem is ants. I don't want ants in my house. The ants should respect my boundaries. What was that other thing again?
If I knew someone was going to take a picture of me, I'd have brushed my hair.
Anyway please enjoy this pumpkin I saw yesterday

Seriously good read. Highly recommend.
I considered writing a long carefully constructed argument laying out the harms and limitations of AI, but instead I wrote about being a hater. Only humans can be haters.
I Am An AI Hater
I am an AI hater. This is considered rude, but I do not care, because I am a hater.

This is the part in the movie where the nervous scientist says: "It's highly improbable this portal will open a gate directly into Hell as long as the power doesn't fluctuate."
Then the lights flicker.
We all know what happens next.
BBC: Pichai said while AI investment had been an “‘extraordinary moment’, there was some ‘irrationality’ ..

“Asked whether Google would be immune to the impact of the AI bubble bursting, Mr Pichai said .. ‘I think no company is going to be immune, including us.’”

Reminder: A lot of great books published this year during absolutely bonkers news & world event times. That squashes people talking about them. Keep buying books please, keep borrowing them from libraries, and for the love of all that's good, talk about them. Post about them. 📚

"You can't un-invent AI!" We can't un-invent asbestos either. That doesn't mean we have to use it.

German court rules that OpenAI violated copyright laws by training ChatGPT on music 🎵

• May set precedent for Europe AI copyright uses

• OpenAI disagrees & can appeal

This matters, among other things because the creators claim the technology is useful for areas they don't know that well (writing, education, etc.)
i’ve said this before but lemme say it again. it makes absolutely 0 sense to talk about “misuse” of llms because there is no clear use or purpose for llms to begin with. genAI is a purposeless tech floating around looking for uptake

Zohran Mamdani polled +40% on men under 30. So we wasted all that time on all those think pieces about how we need a Joe Rogan for the left, when what we actually needed were *policies* for the left.

Immediate reaction: Very angry at the bot scams.

Moments later: "I don't have any of these... do the bots hate my work?"
Writers: Bots are sweeping through Amazon's reviews and emailing authors with gushing scams like "Only 2 reviews for a thrilling work like this?! Jesus wept! I can get your brilliant words in front of yadda yadda yadda..."

Please do not fall for the okey doke.

Yes. "Amazing" is a word someone could use to describe this. "Coherent" on the other hand...
Oh my god some fucking tech dingdong posted this on Twitter with the caption "AI games are going to be amazing" totally seriously, you have to watch it. You have to. In full screen.

There are iconic photographs of our history - those moments that were perfectly captured, telling such a robust story without words.

This is one of them.

This is brutal, but touching, honesty about losing a loved one. It's a great read, but might invoke some heavy feels.
Three years after my husband died, I’m still trying to prove our life together was worth losing his family.

What I live with isn’t forgetting — it’s the blurring of memory.

On the third anniversary, I wrote about grief, memory, and continuing without answers.

Why is it that the undercurrent of these exchanges always boils down to one dumbass questioning: "How did we even art before AI existed?"

This whole thread.
A striking thing about articles I’ve read claiming to “study the effects” of generative AI on student writing skills and consumption of information is that (1) they nearly always find the effects are negative and (2) most “conclusions” are still written assuming that we must use AI, for some reason.
