An Oregon pilot program giving cash to homeless youths sees a staggering reduction in homelessness. The program gave participants $1,000 cash payments each month for two years, and at the end of the project's first phase, 91% of participants reported being in stable housing.

The most visible part of this effort is enforcement. However the other side is support. @pacificahousing.bsky.social is one organization doing this work. We’ve done an expanded outreach pilot that has gone out early mornings & evenings since the summer focused on the business corridors 🧵

Since Victoria's Centennial Square is in the news again, I thought I'd reshare this post from August. I think the revised plans are pretty good, and maybe the best we can hope for. I still think the 2024 plans were outstanding.
#yyj
1/ This is Berczy Park in Toronto. It's an interesting example of a public plaza that works, unlike Centennial Square in #yyj. Why? At a glance, I'd say: places to sit in the shade, neighboring shops to buy a treat, and a sense of whimsy. All part of the new design, and all missing today.

1/ As promised (threatened?), here's the first post in my series on the Centennial Square Revitalization project. This thread is about the revised plan that was presented to Council on Thursday, November 27 and, more specifically, about community safety, both real and perceived.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: normal adults (who aren't pediatric medical professionals) don't spend ANY amount of time thinking about the genitals of children.

They certainly don't bend over backwards to make policing children's genitals part of their job.

This obsession is creepy.

Moreover we have working examples of how private and Indigenous land rights can coexist—see the Nisga'a agreement as an example. Indigenous self government can take many forms that are eminently compatible with the Canadian state, if we only have the will to negotiate in good faith around the issue.

Fair. But that’s not the point.

“Not everyone can or wants to bike. But some people can & do—and they deserve a safe, efficient, affordable way to move through the city. It’s about freedom of choice.”

Will he be running on a platform of no breast augmentation till 30?
It seems like the big argument on his side is regret, but a very small percentage of people who transition regret it. When people do detransition, it’s usually for other reasons.

And sometimes people do things in life they regret later. It happens. That’s a natural result of having free will.
This is Gavin Newsom introducing and attempting to mainstream the idea that adults should also not be allowed to transition.

That he, and people like him, should have the right to dictate whether we receive medical care, or are denied it.

And you ask why we'll oppose him to our dying breaths?
