I do not "get it."
I think this is interesting, and definitely agree that there are huge structural issues with campaign work. But so far, nothing about the actual work conditions folks on campaigns and part of campaign infrastructure face. I think that, more than flat salary, has an effect on people burning out.
This is an excellent two-part overview of one of the problems of politics that those who don't do this professionally don't see - our failure to fund sustained political work means there aren't career ladders for operatives.

I was hoping when large media covered Mobile Fortify, the ICE facial app we revealed in June, it would add substantial information. Instead this front page WSJ piece rehashes our reporting, presents it as new attributed to officials, and forgets to capitalize M in 404 Media bsky.app/profile/cori...
One of the WSJ's A1 stories today was reported *6 months ago* by @404media.co, a team of just four journalists.

The rumor mill is spinning fast and furious already: Megan Browder, a Legal Aid DC exec/former deputy AG, is in the running, per sources. She wouldn't run for the seat, positioning herself as a nonpartisan expert.

I also hear Vincent Orange is telling people he's interested...
Two folks I've already heard might be interested in this appointment: Former councilmember Elissa Silverman and Lisa Rice, the lead backer of Initiative 83.
I just asked @chmnmendelson.bsky.social about the process, and he says he's already had people reach out to him about getting the interim appointment to McDuffie's seat. Now, remember: They can't be registered Democrats.

These numbers are INCREDIBLY misleading. Metro changed the way it measured fare evasion in 2022. This is comparing apples to oranges. You cannot compare 2016 numbers to 2025 - they are measured completely differently!
I asked Metro GM Randy Clarke if allowing riders to pay w/credit cards will reduce Metrobus fare evasion: "I definitely think it will help with that. Every way that we can make it easier to pay, the more likely people will pay.” #wmata Here's how fare evasion has grown with time:

I think the online left has been very conditioned to stan a particular type of primary candidate -- kick-off w/ well produced, compelling intro video, leads to national grassroots donations & you go from there - those candidates have raised a LOT of money, but very few have them have won.
Someone tell me why everyone's falling on their swords for the Blackwater Redditor with the SS tattoo in a primary with a bunch of other candidates that's months away

A few hundred people are gathered in the Columbia Heights Civic Plaza to protest Trump’s federal surge in D.C., especially the crackdown on the immigrant community. More than 250 arrests of immigrants have happened over the past 10 days.

Jamelle and Paul explain exactly what’s happening here: the regime is trying to provoke a violent confrontation with dissidents which allows them to justify a state of emergency that ends all pretense of democracy.

They want an excuse to end freedom of speech and competitive elections.

I’m concerned that people won’t appreciate how big a line is being crossed here. Texas is suspending basic Constitutional freedoms for opposition lawmakers. This isn’t dipping your toe in the authoritarian waters, it’s diving head first into the deep end. This is big league authoritarianism.
Trump has done a lot of authoritarian things this year and IMO none of them is as authoritarian as restricting opposition legislators’ right to travel freely.
WILD situation in Texas right now: The House Speaker has required Dems, who just returned from their out-of-state quorum break, to have police escorts once they leave the chamber. One Dem is refusing to leave the House floor with escort, and GOP leaders have blocked press access to the chamber.

Been in downtown D.C. the last couple days and have seen ZERO cops. Think they are just having them come out at night, and then in the morning it's eerily empty and quiet. (could also just be the usual August city empty-out)

This weekend in D.C. I: Enjoyed a picnic at the U.S. National Arboretum, went grocery shopping, went out to dinner & drinks with friends, and went for a walk to our neighborhood park. The only "wild youth" I saw all weekend was my toddler. We have a thriving, amazing city driven by community.
Trump announced he’s taking control of MPD and deploying 800 National Guard troops—all while pushing misleading crime stats and claiming D.C. is overrun by “violent gangs” and “wild youth.”

Here's what we know:
Trump Takes Control of D.C. Police Department and Deploys 800 National Guard Troops in the City
During Monday’s press conference, Trump declared a public safety emergency and rattled off misleading crime stats.

The gleeful doxing of someone cheating in public is bad even if they are a CEO and even if they are a Coldplay fan. It's bad because this kind of thing is happening to random people on TikTok for such crimes as "sitting silently on a plane" or "being attractive"

I was excited to read this based on the title, I don't agree with everything, but it makes some good points. One thing it misses is the effect of Citizens United in creating the current consultant-run party structure. There was a reason there was suddenly so much $ in consulting under Obama.

The ICE camps are concentration camps. They should be called concentration camps.

It is, of course, important to distinguish between concentration camps and death camps, but also, I am not sure we will know when or if we undergo the transition from concentration camps into death camps.

It is not realistic or sustainable for every single government program to constantly promote itself to the public. The clear villain in the DOGE immiseration campaign is the right. We don't need to play into their attacks by implying that we deserve it.

How Dred Scott Bet on the Supreme Court and Lost
This framing is beneath contempt. The Christian right and MAGA launched an unprecedented assault on the civil rights of a tiny minority and successfully weaponized the pseudoliberal establishment - led by the NYT - to provide it with a medical controversy pretext that doesn’t actually exist.

NOW— Mass ICE arrests happened/are happening at the Manhattan immigration court at 290 Broadway on the 20th floor.

I was just outside the building and an observer came out crying, confirmed they witnessed people getting detained outside courtrooms while families watched and wept.

For Mother’s Day I talked to moms who are being put through hell because of the new administration’s policies.

“I am aware of Project 2025 and their goals of getting women out of the workforce, and this really feels like part of it.”

Being a mom in the federal government wasn’t easy. Trump made it “impossible.”
The Handbasket spoke to several moms about the series of painful choices they've had to make since January.
