Tonight, 132 of Haarlem's streets will be slowed to 30km/h.

We sat down with experts at Gemeente Haarlem about why, how they made it happen and what challenges they faced.

I haven’t seen it illustrated like this before. Very effective messaging. Of course it actually depends a lot on how fast the vehicle’s being driven, how big the vehicle is and how it’s designed, and how small the victims (too often kids) are. Via @yegbike.bsky.social #SpeedKills #CarBloat

Wrote about this many years ago on Twitter, but your actual goal should be 5 trains/buses an hour - so a 12 minute interval.

This breaks a couple of important psychological barriers for people, based on research by TfL (London's transport operator). Will explain. 🧵 /1
If it’s not more convenient than driving, it will always be your second option.

But the magic happens on economics.

The two most vote maximising positions Labour could take in this experiment - holding in both Reform and Green defectors - were investment in public services & wealth taxation.

Economic fairness unites Labour vote in way culture divides it.

Tweets about urban biking in #Dutch cities are routinely replied to with some version of “well, they have the big advantage of being relatively flat.”

The Dutch also have the big advantage of not constantly making excuses and straw man arguments about why they can’t make clearly smarter decisions.

Proud of the steps taken by the city I was born and raised in!
Haarlem is lowering the speed to 30km/h on 132 extra roads!

On 132 roads, the speed limit will go from 50 to 30 kilometers per hour, starting from October. This applies to streets in residential areas and areas where there are many cyclists and pedestrians.

After Houston Mayor John Whitmire called for additional data collection, the project managers spiked plans for a shared-use path because there weren’t enough people riding bikes along the busy street....

Unpopular opinion (among some urbanists):

The author is right. High-speed, battery-powered bikes are a menace in bike lanes.

They're dangerous for those biking slower, and they deter some people from biking at all. Who wants to ride with their 5-year old while someone zooms by at 28 mph?
We need to talk about San Francisco's e-bike problem
E-bikes have exploded in popularity in San Francisco, but given their speed, they shouldn't be treated the same as normal bikes, writes SFGATE's Dan Gentile.

I'm deeply saddened to share that Donald Shoup passed away last night. He was the ideal academic—curious, methodical, and concerned with turning ideas into real-world change. TAing his parking course these past few years has one of the greatest honors of my life. Rest in peace, Shoup Dogg.

Elections matter. A lot.
Brazil's Lula da Silva has halved the Amazon deforestation in 3 years! Last time reduced it by 75%. In between it grew w. Bolsonaro.
"All are the same" is bad reason for not voting, not participating.
Not a time to be spectators, anywhere.
