I don't want to deny that things are still pretty bad, that decarbonisation has to go a lot further, but I really do think it's worth acknowledging that given 15-20 years ago we were on course for a 4C rise, that we're now looking at 2.2-2.6C is a genuinely herculean and heroic achievement.
World still on track for catastrophic 2.6C temperature rise, report finds

Was it Charlemagne who said: "To have another language is to possess another soul."? Universities ditching modern languages are in danger of losing their souls.
The structures of intellectual life in the UK are being pulled out from under our feet.
It needs to stop! Pronto.
I'm so fed up with this. Languages are central to all of higher education. Everyone should be learning languages, precisely because it is hard. Not everything can be transacted in English. A monoglot English language University can only be poorer for the loss of languages.

If we meet someone with charisma, we ask instead, “Can they lead with integrity?”
Rather a potentially toxic leader than a ineffective leader ...Where has that gotten us?"

So loss making OpenAI is now begging for US government money to finance its research based on unproven promises of riches to follow at some unspecified date. Is anyone else recalling renaissance alchemists persuading rich patrons to support them because they'd be turning lead into gold any day now?

When we look at this massacre and many more perpetrated by the RSF, let's be clear who funds, equips & sustains them. It's the UAE. Yes, the same UAE that might own your football club, fly you on your holidays, invests in our national infrastructure. If boycotts work, we should be boycotting now.
“Individuals on the ground sent a message that reached us Monday morning that 1,200 were dead,” Nathaniel Raymond, the lab’s executive director, said. “By that evening, they said 10,000. By Tuesday, we couldn’t reach them anymore. We assume our ground contacts are dead.”

Just finished my final chapter in national church youth work with one more youth camp. Now I officially hang up my hat.

Young people are just the most amazing, wonderful people and the church needs their brave, hope-filled voices. The last five years have been the privilege of my life.

I know John Le Carre's "The Honorable Schoolboy" kind of splits fans as it is a bit of a sprawling mass of a book. But I'm finding all the chapters on the bureaucracy of Whitehall and the Circus are super soothing for drifting off to sleep to.

Maybe I need a bureaucracy genre booklist...
