Ah, but that's just it: the oligarchs don't want more innovation. They want the current wealth & power structure to be frozen in place for as long as possible, and they think that removing a building's structural support is the best way to preserve your spot on the top floor.
Thinking about devastating cuts to NSF: US gov-funded science has been the engine upon which most of the tech wealth was generated. But the oligarchs (currently hoarding much of that $) think it’s their own brilliance & not the accident of standing close to the scientific engine that made them rich.

Weird* how all those people who said we NEEDED an armed society to prevent tyranny even though our kids were dying barricaded behind desks are now all in favor of tyranny.

We must demand better. Not Gavin Newsom, who snatches the belongings of unhoused folks and plays paddy cake with Steve Fucking Bannon. Not Rahm Emanuel, who covered up a murder, closed 50 schools, and shuttered half of Chicago's publicly funded mental health clinics. We need new and better politics.

Let a friend go today. Saw a couple posts about backing up these Nazis in red hats, so I told him “you side with Nazis, we’re not cool”
Not fucking around this time.
My tolerance is zero for people trying to destroy this country.

It's called the wilderness for a reason. Americans should be free to take bison selfies. Better yet, go pet a moose calf.
Parks are meant to be deadly. Folks should bring their own medical teams with them or stay home.
"“I honestly can’t imagine how the parks will operate without my position,” Alex Wild, a ranger who lost his job at Yosemite, wrote ... “I mean, they just can’t. I am the only EMT at my park and the first responder for any emergency. This is flat-out reckless.”"

Democrats basically just want everyone to get along. To fit in and be liked. Republicans want to crush you under their boot and steal all your work and money.
I never understood why Democrats insisted on extolling the "BIPARTISAN Infrastructure Law" as if bipartisanship was the selling point, allowing Republicans to take credit for transformational projects they hadn't voted for.

It should have been touted as the "Biden Infrastructure Package".

Democrats are the opposition through a profound constitutional crisis, the first time since the Civil War that the continued existence of the United States as a republic is genuinely threatened, with 100 subordinate crises happening simultaneously, and they’re like “What’s our message, though?”

Stop saying DEI.

Stop fighting these people on the rhetorical battleground of their choosing.

Stop letting ghouls like Rufo set the terms of all discussions and reality itself.

Stop walking right into the hands of think-tanks and institutes that have set this up for the benefit of the wealthy.

People keep saying Trump’s supporters will turn on him when the economy craters or diseases spread. But that misses the point.

Part of the reason they’re killing these agencies is to hide all that. And the true believers will just bite on whatever conspiracy theory blames it on their enemies.

This is heartening to see! The resistance is beginning.

I know we are tired. I know we are fearful. But we will make ourselves heard and reclaim this country from the grip of MAGA fascism.

I’ve seen the inside of barbed wire prison camps in America. We came back from that and shall overcome this.
The People’s March is moving through the streets of Washington: “We won’t go back!”

A broad coalition of activists — among them climate, women’s rights, immigration, anti-war, LGBT, D.C. statehood, racial justice — are mobilizing in unison against Trump, three days before his inauguration. 🧵

They say it might cost 100 billion to rebuild LA. But money won’t be enough. They’re gonna need something else: Mexicans.
Can not do it without them. And yeah, most will be undocumented.
That’s who rebuilt NOLA after Katrina. They get it done. Heroes. Cement crews, framers…fuck, roofers! The best.

Reminder - it's easy to judge a situation from afar. You have to bring the safety home. How much do you know about your fire department? Do you know its average response time? Its capacity for responding to a natural disaster? Does your local gov have a plan for that kind of response? Is it public?

This is a BIG DEAL. "Outside of the collapse of US manufacturing, few economic forces have done as much damage to the American landscape in the past 50 years." Enforcement of the Robinson-Patman Act would reshape the hollowed out economy.
For decades, big retailers have been allowed to dominate simply by virtue of their size & leverage over suppliers. The FTC's revival of the Robinson-Patman Act stands to change that, with huge upsides for local economies & consumers, @ronmknox.bsky.social writes. And it's got support on the new FTC.
Can Fairness Fix the US Economy?
With its latest lawsuit, the Federal Trade Commission aims to find out.
