1) This shouldn't take too long
2) Oh no

Excellent advice, IMHO.
I embraced this when Jack Cady said it in a short story workshop. The man who encouraged me to own my voice. I've never looked back--why would I when it's so rewarding?!
Read more, write better. Agreed!
If you’re an author who is worried that the stuff you read has too much influence on your writing style, the solution is to read more, not less.

The more stories, styles, voices, and genres you consume, the less impact any one story can have on your personal style.

Read more, write better.

How does this kinda shit keep happening to prominent people and they just brush it off as "well, ChatGPT told me this made up info."

Yeah, and you're a journalist. Why would you ever report on something ChatGPT told you without checking if it actually happened?

History matters. Philosophy matters. Languages and literature matter. Indigenous studies matter. Arts and humanities and social sciences matter. All of them.

This is lovely and true but it's wild how many posts here are now "wow! I had no idea a social network could help me socialise digitally". We are beaten dogs, barely used to being treated with dignity online
The novelty of finding interesting people on here you don’t know through mutuals and feeds is something I haven’t had the pleasure of doing on twitter in quite some time. Enjoying this!

said it elsewhere but: you can't have an excess of culture. however, one big thing i will concede is making art is worth taking seriously. and we live in a landscape where there's little incentive to synthesize or go deeper because the ecosystem is now so reliant on arbitrary virality over criticism

DO NOT give your money to Jeff Bezos. He has plenty. Make a list of the books you want to buy as gifts and buy or order from a local bookstore...if you want those stores to continue to exist.

When I interviewed mutual aid volunteers in Asheville, they had one recurring plea: Don’t forget about us when the news cycle moves on. I recently caught up with one of those organizers who shared some important updates and lessons learned. This is a good time to learn from collective survival work.
The Power of the People Heals
“There's a lot to be said about faith and trust in who we are as people and who we are as humanity,” says organizer Sarah Nuñez.

Genuinely think anyone can “git gud” at any creative craft they are interested in. If we wanted to actually “democratize” art we would invest in housing, healthcare, food and education as human rights. All GenAI does is make people even more financially precarious and less able to pursue a passion
I think a bit of the "AI is democratizing art" argument is trying to avoid the ugly truth that to get good at anything you have to do a lot of it. I grew up "knowing" I was a good writer, but I really wasn't until about 700k words, and it took reading hours of scripts to really have a voice
