I think all my old mates emigrating because there were no jobs between 2008-2014, and then most of my new mates emigrating between 2018-2025 because there are no gaffs, has had a greater effect on social cohesion than migrants

The triple Lock was a promise to the Irish people that we would not become part of an EU-NATO military structure made in 2002 so we would vote for Nice #2.

Removing it is not about 'taking back sovereignty', it is a betrayal of Ireland's sovereignty.

The EU has approved a mechanism to keep €210B in Russian state assets frozen until the Kremlin pays reparations for Ukraine's war damage.

Emergency powers are granted to the European Commission, with a formal decision set for today 5pm local time. The move was approved by a strong majority.

I don't understand how any adult, let alone a politician who's job it is to make decisions for the benefit of the 5m people in the country, can decide it's grand to poison the water so 130k farms can make more money.

What's the point of any of it if you decide poisoning the water is ok 😞

Nitrates derogations are a risky business model for agri-industry. EU Commission seems to be indicating that the new three-year derogation is on borrowed time.

New Ireland Thinks poll shows public want clean, healthy water, and majority not in favour of Ireland seeking another derogation.

Coffee thoughts:

Ireland is a polity where you can go and visit a Minister in a constituency office on a weekend to ask for help filling in a form.

The distance to/from officeholders is effectively zero.

But the distance for most people from *power* can be (invisible to them) huge.

If we'd been bounced into joining NATO by the very small, but very loud, minority of people who support doing that, then we'd now be in a military alliance dominated by an administration murdering people in the Carribean, up to it's neck in the Gaza genocide and siding with Putin against Europe.

The most delightful and hilarious birdcall EVER… (giggles of delight and newfound knowledge to @c0nc0rdance.bsky.social ) (and also a werewolf…) #Birds
A male rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta) in winter plumage.

Ptarmigan is from Gaelic 'tarmachan' meaning "croaker". The p- was added when people mistakenly assumed it was a Greek word.

A bird forever warning people: "A werewolf!" (just in case of werewolves).

If I had failed a responsibility to deliver housing and infrastructure for decades, I too might try to build a narrative blaming my failure on third parties (courts, lawyers, citizens, The Goblin Prince Under The Mountain).

But I see no reason, bar abject power worship, for anyone to repeat it.

Horrible story, and I hope those assholes are caught and dealt with

And while I certainly blame far right agitators, Facebook etc, and sleeveens like McGuirk/Gript for fomenting this kind of awful stuff, Simon Harris and others in government need to take a hard look at themselves and their rhetoric

Two things can be true at the same time: Israel is a rogue state engaged in genocide, and antisemitism is real and thriving. And because of the latter it's understandable that Ireland's small but proud and storied Jewish community might be feeling particularly sensitive right now
