Mamdani has done a lot to critique surveillance and has a better sense than most politicians of the harms it can do to specific communities and activists—but I do worry he will be asked to compromise the high tech focus of the NYPD in exchange for more sweeping police reforms.
This piece includes a lot of good voices that critique surveillance—but the piece itself also does a lot to normalize and justify the blanket surveillance NYC is under without going into the specifics of the harms it’s capable of.

I’d like to point out that this is under a D governor who fought to keep prison slavery legal and works behind the scenes to perpetuate this kind of horrendous environment.

But his personal net worth has increased!

So @alexvitale.bsky.social, who wrote THE END OF POLICING (which I cite heavily in my forthcoming book THE OVERSEER CLASS), has been tapped to join Mayor-Elect Mamdani’s Transition Team to work on “community safety issues.”

This is an extremely promising development.

Corruption right in front of your eyes:

1) Bennet says he wants universal healthcare.

2) DaVita drops $50K into his Super PAC.

3) Suddenly Bennet claims he “can’t do anything” on healthcare as Governor.

This is what bought-and-paid-for politics looks like.

Watching disabled people around the world mourn Alice is a reminder of the good aspect of the internet. 30 years ago, few people outside of SF would ever have known Alice existed. I never would have met her. The internet connected us all. Let’s honor Alice’s memory by using that power and community.
My social media is wall-to-wall love for the incomparable Alice Wong, and I need more words. What captures sadness and/also affection for a community that knows what's been lost?
Alice could not eat food for years.

And yet at Christmas she would bake cookies and mail them to me—such was her desire to provide care for the people she loved.

This. More of this.
Real life Shawshank Redemption, still sucks that he was denied 28 years of freedom.
a big runoff last night, in New Orleans:

Calvin Duncan was exonerated after spending *28 years* in prison; he tried to get his own case records from the New Orleans city clerk—but the office dragged its feet.

So Duncan ran to become city clerk himself, and yesterday ousted the incumbent.

Our beloved Alice Wong has joined the ancestors. It was one of the great honors of my life to call Alice my friend, co-author & co-conspirator. She was a true genius, a force of nature the likes of which the world has never seen before. I love you, Alice, and am equal parts grateful and devastated
