I’m old enough to remember when Conservative Party leaders believed in law and order.
Kemi Badenoch refusing to acknowledge that Tommy Robinson is "far-right", now on LBC, and refusing to condemn Elon Musk's words. In fact she says what Musk said *isn't* incitement. So what would be incitement then? How violent would his words have to be before he was deemed a threat to this country?

The Palestine Action row ought to prompt a rethink of at least two elements of the legislation.

1. In the definition of terrorism, "influence" the Govt should be replaced with "intimidate" it.

2. The "uniform &... images" offence shouldn't depend entirely on the arousing of reasonable suspicion.

Men are extremely keen to explain to me that Britain *needs* a domestic steel production plant and doesn't necessarily *need* universities. Okay. Steel contributed about £1.7bn to the UK economy in 2024. Universities contributed more than £200bn.

Great thread
A under-discussed backdrop to yesterday's election results—Britain today feels less pleasant, well-maintained and orderly than a decade ago: from potholes to phone-snatchers.

I've spent the past few months digging in to why for @economist.com.

A short 🧵 on what I've concluded.
