I will probably never have an experience like this again in my lifetime, so I will always treasure my summer with this family of burrowing owls. 💕🪶

Early morning exercises: 1) Turn your head around, flex your neck muscles, brush your beak. 2) Move your head from side to side. Repeat 60 times. 3) Have a good yawn and stretch - it's good for really waking up. 4) Waking up? No way. Stop bothering me, I'll go back to my Burrow bed.

Jessicowl and Nicowlas were proud of their little Christmas garden. From there, they sent Season's Greetings to friends and relations. The only thing missing were fairy lights. When Nick expressed his wish for a few candles, Jess pointed out they were supposed to be nocturnal, and fond of the dark.

My experience with Ruffed Grouse is that unlike their “heart attack bird” cousins, the Sharp-tailed Grouse, they just walk around like they own the place (which they do) #birds 🌿

Most of my life has been rage, bitterness, and exhaustion. It's good to have been able to find a place near the end of the Earth to slow down and chill.

I hope you can find that near the end of wherever you are.

In the meantime, enjoy tonight's pelican festival 🪶

So happy to announce our new preprint, “A geothermal amoeba sets a new upper temperature limit for eukaryotes.” We cultured a novel amoeba from Lassen Volcanic NP (CA, USA) that divides at 63°C (145°F) 🔥 - a new record for euk growth!

Christmas decoration was somehow about fir trees, holly&ivy. Jessicowl's and Nicowlas' garden sported the typical desert mix of dust ("15 different brands of sand", Nick claimed) and undefinable shrubbery.Working on their patch, Jess and Nick still did their best to create something vaguely festive.
