Also don't think a lot of artists will open with "post online right away!" Cool if you do but it's not even a consideration when talking about learning to draw.

Every artist on the internet just hyped up that Frieren fan artist for trying something difficult.
I mean, things are tough all over. If rude criticism stops you from making art, you should probably not be making art.

It’s funny watching people irrespective of professed political ideology embrace the conservative view that it is oppression for them to be bad at something and a hate crime not to pretend they’re very good at it actually.

I had a dude who kept popping up in my comments until I gave up and blocked him, arguing that there was no point in trying to make art without "innate talent" and everyone else should just use AI. He straight up refused to believe that everyone who makes good art began by making bad art.

In Pixar's Soul there's a scene where the protagonist gets what he hopes is his big break, playing a jazz set with a great artist, and then he asks "What now?" and she says "You come back tomorrow." Or don't.

That's it. You do your thing, and if you're lucky you get to do it some more.

i read slouching toward bethlehem and bright lights, big city back to back in my freshman year and oh boy was that fact extremely obvious throughout the next year of my undergraduate writing
yeah man that’s how you become good. have you ever had a group of pretentious liberal arts students tear apart your experimental second person joan didion ripoff? that shit leave scars on the soul. also a lot of them were right and i actually have my own voice now.

"but if I make bad art no one will praise me for it!" Okay so there's nothing you actually feel driven to create or express, you just have a sucking wound where your sense of self-worth should be, and you think getting compliments for something you didn't even make will heal it

the #1 best thing you learn in art school is how to deal with being shit on in public. not exaggerating. you can learn most other things from books or the internet but being able to take critique is an invaluable skill.

It's not what's stopping them. What's stopping them is they're not artists, and don't make art for its own sake. They're imagining a project they would like to engage a visual artist to create. People do not have realistic expectations about investing in commissioned artwork.

The great old comedy writer Larry Gelbart said that your style is formed by what you can’t do. I wish more people understood that. That and the Martha Graham quote about keeping the channel open.

This has been said a million different times and ways and it never seems to penetrate but I’ll try again: Using AI to “do” art isn’t possible. Art is not the process of coming up with a good idea to get started and then executing it flawlessly in the style of someone you admire.

every school is led by pathetic losers and nazis
The UNC system just released its final policy on mandatory syllabi disclosure, stating that syllabi are university (not faculty) IP and certain course info must be posted on new, publicly searchable databases before every semester.

A thread about what's changed from the draft I reported on earlier:
NEW: Public universities in red states, from Texas to Florida, are increasingly required to make their syllabi public. The University of North Carolina may be next. Does "syllabi transparency" help combat distrust in higher ed, or feed ill-informed suspicions of it? www.chronicle.com/article/when...

people tell me all the time how universal and global #adoption is, when in fact adoption agencies have time and again dangled promises to the families of the “orphans” they want to “save” in non-Western countries by exploiting their ignorance of the modern Western concept of plenary adoption.

Early To Bed is a queer/woman owned shop in my neighborhood that sells toys of all kinds for all bodies, as well as gender affirming clothes and accessories (binders, packers, tuckable, etc). They also host classes, workshops, and community events.

Great online store too for non-Chicagoans.
