No. 21: 1929 by Andrew Ross Sorkin. Not necessarily the book I’d recommend if you want a deep *economic* explanation of the 1929 crash, but a lot of very interesting human insights into the bankers convinced themselves to continue inflating a giant speculative bubble
Should I blow up whatever tenuous relations I have with my father’s extended family by telling my cousin that he is spreading der sturmer level propaganda about Muslims

The Germans knew; they just didn’t want to think about it.
As I have said before, the broader silence on the ethnic pogrom of terror across this country is one of those things you can’t help noticing from the loudest special boy politics knowers on here.
Congresswoman Yassamin Ansari of Arizona’s 3rd District describes the “horrific conditions” she witnessed inside the Eloy ICE Detention Center near Phoenix — including a leukemia patient “vomiting blood,” detained in February and forced to wait eight months before finally seeing an oncologist...

it’s a shame that the antichrist is also the funniest man in the country
Trump: We gave her the Presidential Medal of Freedom. It’s much better than the Congressional Medal of Honor because soldiers get the Congressional. And they’re in very bad shape because they're dead. She gets it and she's a healthy, beautiful woman. And they’re rated equal

From the outside it might look like ICE officers wear masks to avoid accountability, but in reality they are a way to avoid accountability.

I really wish they would message it as "we changed course to get SNAP funded because withholding SNAP funds was unexpected", it is at least a cohesive reasoning for why they couldn't have done this deal at the start and avoided this pain.

Given softbank’s previous financial hiccups, this is probably a buy signal for nvidia lol
Japanese giant SoftBank said Tuesday it has sold its entire stake in tech giant Nvidia for $5.83 billion.

The difference is that they made a hell of a lot of federal workers miss paychecks and snap recipients worry about where their next meal was coming from. You can’t play with people‘s live like this without delivering anything.
The people mad today were equally mad six months ago when the same thing happened and then forgot it happened mostly. With that said I think the risk for Dems is that the rage persists in an inchoate way that can’t even really be cured, since no one remembers where it came from

my controversial opinion that nobody likes is basically that we have no escalation ladder, both here and for incarceration. there are a lot of people who should not be, properly speaking, free, but unfortunately we have basically one level of restricted freedom and it's "torture pit"

gillibrand — the worst New York can get
Gillibrand says she is not doing interviews when I asked if she had spoken with Zohran Mamdani since his victory.

There were a lot of now defunct websites—Everyday Feminism, Thought Catalog—that introduced a ton of shibboleths into the teenage millennial brain
I want to dig through the web archives and figure out how exactly it became a truism among The Millennials that respectability politics are actually a bad thing. I feel like it happened by way of a broken telephone reception of Stokely Carmichael.

This is why life insurance usually timely pays out claims—it is a functional market, bc it can deny coverage.
The basic problem of health insurance: if you want sick people to be able to get insurance, then the insurance product ceases to be traditional insurance, bc the insurer cannot price risk. Once you accept that sick people should get insurance, you must accept some variety of a socialized system.
Rick Scott told me his plan would be to take all of the remaining ACA subsidies and redistribute them to HSA accounts and people can then buy whatever insurance a state certifies. Basically a repeal/replace.
He denied when I asked wouldn’t that create two-tiered system where sick pay much more…

Wait Fetterman didn’t even try to salvage it with the amendment? Lmao
The shutdown deal includes a ban on hemp products that none of its negotiators debated in public.

Disappointing that only 24 senators voted against killing an amendment to strike that ban.

Interestingly, ChatGPT did not understand what the hemp provision did. lawyers, i guess we still have jobs

Not that it matters, but the “sue the government, collect $500k” provision effectively violates the 27th amendment
Anyway the eight Dem senators were too lazy to do this

festerman being one of the undertakers of the hemp trade is extremely funny given his political history. Maybe the stroke also destroyed this part of his brain, but legal weed is historically something he actually cared about
But like actually where did the political will to take the hemp industry out back and shoot it come from
November 11, 2025 at 1:55 AM
the Republican attempt to appeal to young men by becoming the vice party (crypto, weed, sports gambling, transgressive racism) may fail after all
A prohibition movement ready to make weed de facto illegal again seems like it’ll be ready to roll again in the future, but it seems like it’d be a death by a thousand cuts type situation, in lieu of the very long odds of outright making it illegal again in legal states

I think we can make Joe Rogan the Joe Rogan of the left
The GOP just hates successful direct to consumer businesses, first was the de minimus exception for shipping, now they kill hemp derived THC, what will they kill next
But like actually where did the political will to take the hemp industry out back and shoot it come from
