this is precisely why it is so frustrating to hear claims that adapting to AI is the same as the adaptation to the internet or personal computing—tech that evolved from existing tech, including public interest & private infrastructure.

with AI, it’s *just* manufactured private infrastructure
Most "bubbles" have had *some* amount of public demand:

With the "tech bubble," the general public was interest.
The "housing bubble" was fulled by lots of people wanting homes.

But this "AI bubble" is the first to my knowledge where there's ZERO public demand…the people don't want this shit.

This gets at the fundamentally flawed approach of the federal government: they are trying to find a policy solution to an identity problem.

It is part of the polarized, populist identity to be opposed to an Ottawa and Liberal Canada are not them. No policy will change that, as TMX revealed.

This broadly tallies with my experience of teaching, and what colleagues have shared, over the last decade or so, though of course there are exceptions
An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

I see AI slop in anything, I instantly disregard the whole thing. It's like finding a slug in your salad. If you can't write without an LLM, or you can't source art that isn't genAI, you can't be trusted to do anything. Sorry. Absolute deal-breaker.
I don’t know if anyone else notices or cares, but when I see a presentation in which the speaker uses obviously generated-AI images to illustrate their slides, it makes me immediately less confident in whatever other content they’re presenting.

Been covering DULF's constitutional challenge for @thetyee.ca this week. Crown prosecutors have tried to poke lots of small holes in what founders Eris Nyx and Jeremy Kalicum were doing. Nyx and Kalicum have largely defended themselves saying they were doing the best they knew how at the time.

this is a public health intervention.

DULF was doing Vancouver Coastal Health‘s job: providing drugs of known composition and potency as an alternative to the unregulated drug supply — because VCH wouldn’t.

VCH‘s leadership should be the people on trial
DULF was collecting donations (legal) and buying heroin, cocaine and meth off the dark web (illegal). Once they had the drugs Vancouver Coastal Health worked with them to help rigorously test the drugs and label the drugs (legal), and DULF would sell the drugs at cost to members (illegal).
