V good: 'My Socialism is a Christian Socialism, an actual redemption of a Christian Evangelicalism I have rejected, where I had read, 'Blessed are the poor', and immediately amended it with 'in spirit' to deflect it, to not have to deal with the open wound in our society that Socialism addresses.'

Chicago priest Fr. Larry Dowling describes procession to ICE facility: “No one had the courage to speak directly to us. No one from Homeland Security could stand in the presence of the Monstrance holding the Blessed Sacrament. No wonder. Evil is repelled, recoils in the presence of Christ.”

the thing everyone is going to have to accept is that the post-trump period, whenever it comes, will not and cannot be a project of national unity, it must be a project of partisan project of renewal, in the same way that reconstruction and the new deal were partisan projects of renewal.

I think Altman assumes that “PhD-level expert” means someone who speaks confidently on everything as opposed to saying “it’s nuanced,” losing their keys, and getting maniacally fixated on their current topic to the point of seeing it in everything.
“GPT-5 is the first time that it feels like talking to an expert in any topic — a Ph.D.-level expert,” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said.

This will have to count as my Supreme Court term review.

I make that point that there's no point in reviewing what the Supreme Court has done because the rule of law is dead in this country anyway.

My latest in @thenation.com
The Rule of Law Is Dead in the US
The rule of law presupposes that there are rules that provide a consistent, repeatable, and knowable set of outcomes. That’s no longer the case.

“Pedocon theory does not involve secret networks of underground tunnels where adrenochrome is harvested for reptilian overlords. Pedocon theory is not hiding beneath twelve layers of misdirection. Pedocon theory is rooted in the basic politics of the reactionary right.”
We Need to Talk About Pedocon Theory
The connection been Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein is no accident, but reveals a deep logic at the heart of reactionary politics.

Doing some work on 'what is a professor' for an article and found this fun quote...

"In The Uses of the University (2001), former University of California President Clark Kerr admits
that he often thinks of his faculty as “a series of entrepreneurs with a common grievance over
parking.”

Fantastic read. This line...

"Consider the influence of MTV’s Jersey Shore. Once holding such a monopoly on a generation’s attention, it is now localized to the Shore Store, which exists with all the enthusiasm and obligation of a land acknowledgment at a City Council meeting."

I gotta say I find a lot of AI discourse around higher ed very confusing. "if ChatGPT can write your essays is college even worth it?" did people think math teachers were assigning problem sets because *they* couldn't figure out the answers?
