The US worked hard to remove Chapter VII language from the latest UN Security Council resolution on Gaza, that would have demanded an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire and the release of hostages, and then vetoed it anyway. 14 for, 1 against. Utterly depraved.

my country elected a fascist 10 years ago and he's now arguably the most unpopular pm we've ever had and we still can't get rid of him because once a fascist gets into power, typically you do not get them out without a whole lot of mass violence. Don't be like us.
I'm headed right now to vote for Kamala Harris. I hope you do too. I don't know how else to put this without sounding too earnest, or like an asshole, but you can't easily undo fascism. I am voting for her and expect to yell at her for good. Only under her administration is that a real possibility.

Everyone needs to understand that the biodiversity crisis isn’t just some vague academic concern for ecologists to flap about, it’s literally a threat to our continued existence.

Eg: bats die off, insect numbers explode, more insecticide is used, and babies die.

‘My jaw dropped’: Bat loss linked to death of human infants
In places where bat populations crashed, farmers sprayed more insecticides, and baby mortality spiked

Jupyter notebooks are great for interactive work, but I'm increasingly pushing my trainees to move their important code ASAP into imported functions defined outside the notebook. I've seen too many examples of global variables wreaking having by being used inside functions.

Early mornings can be hard. I’m pretty sure this Greater Yellowlegs woke up and put some of his parts on wrong!
It had just finished being ousted by a Sora, and on its return fly by, for a moment this yellowlegs flipped completely upside down with the exception of its head!🪶

It's not that I think Harris and Walz are perfect or The Dream; it's that the prospect of a Democratic administration that actually *does stuff* makes me want to weep with joy and relief.

No, Goddamnit, WashPost, it's not on her. It's on him and you. She faces nothing but racism and misogyny. You, as editors, face the test of how you will deal with that. You fail.

Does anyone have info about the context of this slide? I see it credited to an IBM presentation from 1979---but a presentation by whom, to whom about what?

Ah, FB memories serving up some winners.

This is what an itemized $1,330,000 NICU hospital bill looks like (only 96 days to get there). The apple is there for scale.

Here’s why I share it.

Too many ppl don’t know abt lifetime caps and pre-existing bans.

Bc the STILL-VULNERABLE ACA banned them.

there's a certain irony that liberals who have spent four years yelling at leftists who criticize Biden at all for any reason have now, in one week, done more damage to Biden's candidacy than all those leftists combined
I think the freakout has been absurd and overblown and far more damaging than the debate itself, which would have been survivable if everyone had been willing to circle the wagons and push back on it

I am, from a purely pragmatic standpoint, extremely concerned that the damage cannot be overcome
Breaking news: President Biden and his senior team said they accepted the grim ultimatum they’ve been hearing from almost all quarters of the Democratic Party — to demonstrate his fitness for office or face a significant effort to force him to step aside.
