*TRIGGER WARNING: Mentions of DV*

This entire thread.

A lot of you know what happened to me February. I was assaulted by an ex, who threatened to kill me. I did not fight back.

I called the police. They didn't investigate, misinterpreted a California statute, and deemed me the aggressor.
“Who are you going to call if something goes wrong?”

Let me impress this upon you: if you call the cops, they may shoot a child. They also might not come. They do not have any obligation to show up.

Greetings from Houston.

"It doesn’t make any sense. These are the people that were brought to the U.S. by the U.S. armed forces. They did not come to the U.S. illegally. They did not go across Mexico and then try to enter the United States. So, why attack this group? It's simply inexplicable."
A former Afghan National Army soldier applying for asylum in the U.S. was arrested by federal immigration agents at his Houston-area home, according to his attorney, who said the man and most of his family are being threatened with deportation.
Former Afghan soldier arrested at Houston-area home by ICE, stripped of asylum protections, attorney says
The soldier is one of at least 20,000 Afghans seeking asylum nationwide, having fled Afghanistan after aiding the U.S. military during the two-decades-long war there.

Journalists have to make judgments based on the available evidence all the time--about character, about honesty, about consistency, about motivation. It's disingenuous to pretend that doing so is wildly outside the bounds of a reporter's job, or that "objectivity" means never expressing an opinion.>
Breaking: ABC News says senior national correspondent Terry Moran "has been suspended pending further evaluation." This since-deleted tweet is the reason for the suspension:

It's true that kids are at low risk of severe COVID outcomes but it does appear that schools were a factor in community spread. I get that the learning losses are real but it's weird that people act like this was an open-and-shut policy blunder, like we could have reopened with no downside.

The most bizarre thing about the COVID School Closure Discourse is how commentators take it for granted that closing schools had no effect on transmission or deaths but that's not at all what the evidence says.

I finally got a chance to listen to the whole episode and it is truly excellent and well worth a listen!

Goes through many things often not covered, including multiple journalist failures that you should know about.

Top notch ⭐, @michaelhobbes.bsky.social!

Like, this guy isn't normal, and we do have to talk about the fact that a certain group of uber-wealthy people have invented a fictional promised land and they're using all their money and power to drag us there, kicking and screaming.

Yes. I have heard this from both liberal and conservative people with sources inside the agency. It’s not just the pushback, it’s also that many officers want to believe they’re targeting the “bad guys” and this admin is telling them “screw you, grab families.”

Genuinely, morale is way down.
I think people are sleeping on how catastrophically bad ICE morale is right now.

honestly the problem with trying to use repost as the term for the retweet action is that reposting is already a concept understood by basically everyone to mean something entirely different. like I'm never going to be able to pull off calling a retweet a repost because it's not the same thing

Honestly the coolest thing about being a writer in the age of AI is that it's going to make everyone else's writing so much worse that I'll just seem like a genius in comparison.
I reckon if you've been a writer for 15 years and you can comfortably replace part of your process with ChatGPT, it speaks volumes about your writing

I cannot emphasize this enough: Please do not use AI tools as therapy. Not only is it not a good replacement for actual therapy, but your chat logs could be shared with the government, and I don't think you need a reminder that especially right now in the US, that could put you in danger.
