Could someone explain to me what is meant when a British person refers to "the middle class" ? Like, in the US, as I hear it, it basically just means a person who makes a certain amount of money, not too far below and not wildly above the median. Seems like a complex concept when UK writers use it?

Edwin had reached the last chapter of Mr Kafka' s book, and was dismayed that it gave no advice about what to do if your wife turned into a giant Cornish pasty and bore you a misshapen pastry baby with a detachable head.

Once. I asked it what books I'd written and it got the first two right but then hallucinated a YA called The Cat And The Staircase.

My elderly PC is dying and I am resigning myself to the annoyance of learning a new operating system, because to avoid chatbot creep I'm jumping ship to Linux.
Hands up if you've never used Chat GPT ✋

(I feel like Dozer and Tank in The Matrix right now - at first I didn't use it because, rather ironically, I'm lazy and stubborn (peak Taurus energy there) - literally no, don't make me use the new thing I don't wanna. Now I'm glad I didn't 😅)
Probably a good way to tell right now if the job you’re applying for is run by absolute dumbfucks is to ask if they’re using AI.

I'm not even a knitter & I'm giving #gameofwool the side-eye. All the contestants seem lovely and very creative but I feel like they could have set a more reasonable timescale and then just had them finish the projects in the barn if they thought footage of people sitting there knitting was needed.

UK friends of a #goth / #tarot persuasion, the Killstar eBay outlet are selling these cards for £7 a box and they're an absolute bargain - heavy card, slightly metallic, silver edged, about the size of a big Thoth. Not sponsored or anything, just wanted to share.

If people who are 'influentialish in AI ethics' want to listen to my point of view they can contact me and offer to pay me.

Which I note that AI companies did not do when they scraped my books or my AO3.
People blocking you, whether artisinally or via blocklist, are doing you the courtesy of signaling that you will not vibe well with each other and self-selecting out of the pool of people on Bluesky you will potentially have to deal with.
Blocking hatemongers is one thing but this trend of using mass block lists to avoid hearing from people who might or might not hold points of view you expect to disagree with is unhealthy imo and hurts the platform.

Bluesky was better off with folks like Margaret Mitchell and Giada Pistilli on it.

A1 re-framing. (I'm not sure why you'd frame a floor hot dog but I hear there's room in the Louvre.)
"How do you expect to win back men...?"

We don't want those men. They are the hot dogs on the floor of humanity and we still have all these nice prepped hamburger patties if someone would just let them cook.

I'm reasonably certain this is Big Red, the Parker Duofold I use every day, though my great-uncle Tom is unlikely to have bought it in Denmark.

Now I am wondering who I know who could tell me what 34 Kr was worth in 1928. I'm a little surprised it was more than a Montblanc.

I still judge all medieval grand strategy games against Defender of the Crown.
It's kind of impossible now to understand how much of an OH SHIT moment this game was at the time.

Like someone dropping a F15 into WW2 or something. The visuals. The audio. Everything about it.
Defender of the Crown ⚔️ First released in 1986, this was Cinemaware's debut game, one of medieval strategy and mini games. A technical showpiece for the Commodore Amiga featuring Jim Sach's artistic talents.

This truly was a showstopper for the young computer released only the year before.
