More than 1800 detainees are missing after the closure of Alligator Alcatraz. Their families and lawyers can’t find them and they’ve vanished from the ICE database. Feels like this should be a much bigger story www.miamiherald.com/news/local/i...
Hundreds of Alligator Alcatraz detainees drop off the grid after leaving site
As of the end of August, the whereabouts of two-thirds of more than 1,800 men detained at Alligator Alcatraz during the month of July could not be determined by the Miami Herald.

It’s been sad this year watching how the White House press corps refuses to back each other up. Here a female journalist is insulted and denigrated and the next male reporter just moves on to a new question. You’re all in this together, folks. Time & again, they won’t stand up for their colleagues.
Trump to a female reporter who tries to ask him about his plans for Memphis: "Quiet. You're really obnoxious ... I'm not gonna talk to you until I call on you."

I gave my heart and soul to that place. Built entire sections for journalists pushed out of their home countries.

When the writer I hired, Jamal Khashoggi was murdered by Saudi Arabia, they paraded me around as a symbol for press freedom.

I put MY LIFE on the line to defend journalism and WaPo.
weird that neither of these articles two main stories decrying censorship mention WaPo's firing of @karenattiah.bsky.social I guess democracy really does die in darkness

We are at the point in the honoring-Charlie-Kirk's-memory cycle when faculty are being fired for posting, without comment, Charlie Kirk's words. At the behest of politicians sworn to uphold the first amendment, and in public institutions covered by first amendment protections.

What Trump has done so far to help fight crime in NYC:
* Cut our FEMA anti-terror funding
* Cut our DOJ gun violence prevention grant
* Proposed cutting our DOJ funding for hate crime response
* And most importantly: Refused to lift a finger to stop the flow of guns into NYC from other states

The media lost its MIND when Obama tried to make some small changes to the press pool system. Now Trump is quite openly rendering it into a North Korea-esque state-media system and ... has a single journalist or outlet stood up to protest?
an interesting side note to this oval office thing:

This has been the golden rule for fascists and racists since time began:

Identify the parts of your nation that are crumbling (on your watch) and blame it on people who don’t look like you.

What is rare (and uniquely dangerous) is to find these people running the government.
Stephen Miller: "What would LA look like without illegal aliens? You would be able to see a doctor in the ER right away, no wait time, no problem. You kids would go to a public school that had more money than they know what to do with. Classrooms would be half the size."

Mahmoud Khalil was imprisoned for months even though no charges were filed against him-which is blatantly unconstitutional

Watch Pam Bondi fight this case to the Supreme Court
BREAKING: Mahmoud Khalil, has filed a $20m lawsuit against the Trump regime, alleging Khalil was falsely imprisoned, maliciously prosecuted, & falsely smeared as an antisemite as Trump tried to deport him for Constitutionally protected peaceful protests.

NOTE: Khalil was never charged for any crime

As Marshall, a doctor, well knows, Medicaid recipients don't engage in fraud (they can't, since they are not involved in payments); it is corrupt health care providers (including some doctors) who defraud Medicaid programs.
Roger Marshall: "When they talk about people not being on Medicaid anymore, half of those people are on it because of fraud or some type of abuse of the system, the other half is because they're unwilling to work 20 hours a week."

ICE is attempting to deport an Atlanta-based Spanish-language reporter from El Salvador who has been covering their immigration abductions. He has legal work authorization and a path to a green card.

This is pretty obviously an assault on the free press.

Two of the three states with the largest population of people in the U.S. illegally are the red states of Texas and Florida. Trump, notably, does not name their cities when calling on ICE to execute more aggressive immigration raids. He does, however, name LA, Chicago and New York.

This is serious, rigorous analysis and it should change the way the media has been covering these protests. These were, in the aggregate, *massive.*
Based on crowd-sourced records of No Kings Day event turnout, and extrapolating for the cities where we don't have data yet, it looks like roughly 4-6 million people protested Trump across the U.S. yesterday. That's nearly 2% of the U.S. pop!

Mobilized anti-Trump resistance is exceeding 2017 levels
"No Kings Day" protests turn out millions
Our unofficial estimate is that around 4 million people attended a protest event yesterday. Anti-Trump resistance is outpacing 2017.
