I'm shocked.
POLITICO: “.. They referred to Black people as monkeys and ‘the watermelon people’ and mused about putting their political opponents in gas chambers. They talked about raping their enemies .. and lauded Republicans who they believed support slavery.

Sorry, this is where it starts
Sunday reading:

I wrote about the aggrieved extremist who is currently firing thousands of federal workers and ravaging state capacity based on conspiratorial nonsense - and about mainstream media’s infuriating tendency to sanitize Russell Vought and the regime he serves.

This week’s piece:
We need to talk about Russell Vought – But Properly
Why certain mainstream outlets insist on sanitizing Vought as a devout “small government” conservative – and what actually animates his war against pluralistic democracy

Thread
The Daily is committed to sanitizing Vought and ignoring what they regard as unsavory ideology. Because engaging with what is actually animating Vought would make it very hard to uphold the “normal politics” framework that defines much of mainstream political journalism.

This is exactly where I'm at.
The specific ask is healthcare, but at root the principle is that if they need democratic votes, republicans don’t get to tell them to go fuck themselves and then blame them for the results. And at root *that* is about the republicans’ autocratic tendencies.

If/when Dems regain control of Congress, the path is clear. No clerks. No building. No shadow docket. Nothing, until the Wizards In Robes stop ignoring the law, data, history, precedent, & the plain meaning of words in the Constitution. And there will be 25, with 9 chosen by lottery for any case.
Today’s shameful shadow docket decision from the Supreme Court—allowing Trump to unilaterally cancel $4 billion in aid—is not behavior that any healthy democracy tolerates of its judiciary. It is a sign of constitutional rot that precedes the rule of law’s collapse. slate.com/news-and-pol...
The Supreme Court Just Rewrote the Constitution to Give Trump Terrifying New Powers
The conservative supermajority's lawless shadow docket decision let the president unilaterally cancel $4 billion in foreign aid.

Nice, quick thread
“Why did WV and Kentucky become Red”

a: because economic shifts in industry caused people to leave both states, and the remaining (largely white) population resented a Democrat party at a national level that reflects the needs of the broader country.
like this feels to me like people forget *why* OH/NE/IA vote red now and are trying to rationalize it for why the party as a whole needs to move to the centre

All of this
As America nears a tipping point, Russell Vought desires a radical rightwing “counter-revolution.”

For @zeit.de, I wrote a profile of one of Trumpism’s key figures – and one of Trump’s most dangerous henchmen.

Some thoughts from the piece (since it is in German):
Russell Vought: Das ist Trumps gefährlichster Stratege
Er organisiert vom Weißen Haus aus den Umbau der USA. Russell Vought ist Spitzenjurist, christlicher Nationalist – und die subtile Kampfmaschine im Auftrag von Trump.

This article perfectly captures the asymmetrical battle between the illiberal right and everyone else. Trump says churches can now endorse candidates. Liberal churches say "no, that's bad for our faith, don't do it." Right wing churches say "LET'S GO BRANDON! F- YEAH"

This thread is 1000% correct.
The basic fallacy in chasing votes by being "tough on immigration" is that the modal American's position on the issue is "Deport the Bad ones and keep the Good ones," and they alone know who is which, and that simply does not translate into workable policy. So this kind of gestapo stuff (1/2)
