I knew the Spencer Cox is a moderate, serious republican stuff was bullshit all along and I would like my award for that now.
Utah has had universal vote-by-mail since 2019, and a recent poll found that 87 percent of Utahns trust that their ballots are counted accurately. But Utah’s governor signed a law this spring that ends this system.
Utah Was a Rare Red State to Champion Mail Voting. That Era Is Ending.
Inspired by the architects of Project 2025, Utah adopted a Republican bill to end universal mail voting and impose new restrictions on absentee ballots.

What does it say about this country that that the kind of open, rank bigotry Trump administration officials regularly express towards black immigrants apparently has no social cost because of the number of Americans who quietly agree or don't care.

pure cruelty
Nayra Guzmán was 15 days post C-section — going to see her baby in the NICU — when she was taken to Broadview and held in custody for about 34 hours.

She slept on a bench and barely got food. She couldn't pump.

Her story is a rare window into the growing detention of pregnant & postpartum people.
Her baby was in the NICU. She was in ICE detention.
Before Trump took office, postpartum immigrants were rarely detained by ICE. Nayra Guzmán was detained while her 15-day-old baby was in the NICU.

Isn’t this the guy that’s supposed to be the GOP’s moderate golden boy
Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said he supports a proposed constitutional amendment that would ensure the GOP-dominated Legislature has the ability to gerrymander congressional districts to their advantage.

“I have deep, deep concerns about a state that is run by direct democracy,” Cox said.
‘Not a turf war’: GOP lawmakers say they’ll appeal Utah’s new congressional map to the Supreme Court
Utah Republican lawmakers say they'll convene a special session to put a constitutional amendment on the 2026 ballot in an effort to ensure lawmakers have the ability to draw political boundaries.

while I’m being cranky, access journalism needs to go. When the president does his “I’m alpha because I insulted you” thing somebody needs to fall on his sword and say “what the fuck is wrong with you, old man?” on a hot mic. the hero of the wizard of Oz is Toto.

So we are forcibly sterilizing women again? Are you fucking kidding me?
“Many of the women say that they were pressured to have unwanted or unnecessary gynecological procedures while in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement”

BREAKING: At Pope Leo XIV’s urging, U.S. Catholic bishops just delivered the strongest rebuke of a sitting president in Church history — condemning Trump-Vance raids as “inhumane” and “dehumanizing” in a 216–5 vote.
NEW: At Pope Leo’s Urging, Bishops Issue Historic Rebuke of Trump’s Raids
Nearly all U.S. Catholic bishops united in Baltimore to denounce the Trump administration’s “inhumane” deportation campaign — a near-unanimous, unprecedented moral stand against a sitting president.

Every single democratic politician should bring these families as their guests to the SOTU. Every democrat should have these families on their podcasts, tik toks, instagrams, etc. Get someone a book deal here. Connect them with journalists. Flood the fucking zone, we need these stories
This story makes me think more about how many families in Chicago of deported residents need support and also need to feel they can share their stories. They need to feel safe. This is one story I'm sure of many many more.

i want to repeat this: mamdani and spanberger have run similar campaigns tailored to their respective electorates and it is maddening to watch political journalists attempt to create some broad contrast where none exist
the other thing about this is that there is no reason to pit these candidates against each other? each are good fits for their respective electorates and each shows the value of vigorous campaigns focused on the stated material problems of voters.

Refusing migrants the opportunity to receive sacraments is anti-Catholic bias no matter how you spin it.

It’s so interesting to me that he refers to his faith and the gospel he believes in as Christian and not Catholic. His kids go to Christian school, not catholic. I wonder if he’s trying to appease people here by not drawing that distinction.
JD Vance says he’s raising his kids Christian and hopes his wife, Usha, comes around to the faith

“I honestly do wish that. I believe in the Christian gospel, and I hope eventually, my wife comes to see it the same way."
