“Trump is destroying democratic norms. Democrats have decided to follow him into the basement,” our columnist David Brooks writes. “When both parties cooperate to degrade public morality, then nobody even notices as it’s happening.”
Opinion | The Death of Democracy Is Happening Within You
Yes, Trump is assaulting democracy, but what worries me more is what has happened to the rest of us — the loss of the convictions and norms that undergird democracy.

It’s clear that you actually care a ton about what people think of you, you just think making Bluesky mad will make you look good to the people whose opinions actually matter to you
im just not that concerned with my personal brand or public reputation in that particular way. and its ok if people are upset. we live in upsetting times. i like chart tweets and talking to folks on the phone and traveling to places to understand things better -- for the paper and the book

The ACA was gutted by Democrats. you can argue those key democrats could've been siding with what many see as the more liberal/patient centered options. or you could say it was unfortunate that Dems didnt have 60+ more liberal senators.

but it was Democrats.
Ok, but maybe you need to re-work that a bit. Also, you could also acknowledge that the original ACA was gutted by Republicans before it was finally passed, which is partly why it has been a problem for some.

While Vought traces the “leftwing revolution” back a hundred years, to the progressive era, there is no question that the election of Barack Obama was a radicalizing moment for him and many key thinkers on the radical Right - as were the multiracial protests in the summer of 2020.

i cannot get over how quickly this is happening. the decline of the other two branches/ascent of the lawless executive is outpacing actual democratic decline, which is usually what precipitates executive consolidation. but in our case, the other two branches are collaborators
We are living through the most consequential shift in the constitutional government of the United States in over a hundred and fifty years and nobody seems to have even noticed yet.
Congress no longer holds the power of the purse, the executive can just do whatever they want with federal monies

Don’t Bet Against Bari Weiss

Really? Seems far more likely that that’s the whole reason she got the job.
Not an expert on this stuff but I have the sense that no one backing Weiss understands that what she has done her whole career, opinion-based news-flavored content, is distinct from news reporting.
Bari Weiss introduced herself to CBS News staff today on the network's 9AM call, saying she wants to "win," which requires restoring trust to CBS. She also said she was excited for staff to get to know the Free Press, and ended her remarks by saying: "Let's do the fucking news."

That this is not only considered implausible, but that nobody in the top echelons of Congress (in either party!) will even consider being gauche enough to say the i-word, is the surest sign that the entire federal legislative branch has declared bankruptcy as a going concern.
Look. Invading our own country is about as straightforward a case as you can have for impeachment. The GOP abandoning the Constitution is kind of the only story there is and it gets no coverage.
Guys. I just had a crazy idea. What if the President DIDN’T deploy troops in American cities. Just a thought. Have we tried that before?

Everything about this is profoundly disgusting but the part at the beginning where he talks about how people shouldn’t have to fear going outside is particularly rich, given the mass abductions of Americans by ICE he’s apparently a big fan of

New hobby project!

While hiking recently, my mind wandered. I thought about how much I love (and am made nervous by) being in the backcountry, whatever that means.

The definition I've always heard is "5 miles from a road". But when you're out in the woods, it's hard to know how far away a road is.

This seems wildly overthought. It’s an ad with a pun. That’s it. Done.
The Sweeney ad is undoubtedly a product of this cultural moment. But it can't be talked about, not because of a right or wrong answer (there probably is one but that's not the point), but because any speech act about it just gets ground up for processing.

Including this article. Including my post.

As i have been saying for years now, the most practically effective, strategically feasible, and 100% non-violent way to abolish ICE is to make working there--in any capacity, at any level--one of the most socially unpopular things an American can do.
pretty wild that ICE ERO is currently hiring Directors for 21 of its 25 Field Offices. must be some pretty severe turnover!

If the NYT gave the Biden-leaving-Afghanistan coverage to just one of the 30 most recent Trump corruption or incompetence scandals, nobody would be making this critique
so ... when the NYT doesn't report on what you want it to report on, it deserves condemnation.

and also, when the NYT reports on A1 on what you want it to report on, it deserves condemnation.

I’ll never understand this argument. Low-info voters a) are only ever gonna see headlines so they matter more not less and b) get the info they do absorb from people and places…profoundly informed by NYT headlines. Also c) what’s wrong with wanting headlines that don’t insult our intelligence?

I don't understand how the Times can never determine whether Trump is lying but can say with certainty when he is joking.
President Trump on Tuesday joked to reporters that he would like to be the next Pope. He took it a step further on Saturday, sharing what appeared to be an A.I.-generated photo of himself wearing the traditional vestments of the pontiff.
