When this happened in Trump’s first administration, Senate Republicans like Lindsay Graham rebuked him and threatened to hold up legislation. Senator Marco Rubio, now the nation’s top diplomat, called for severing US ties with Saudi Arabia over human rights. Press should ask them about it too.

Astonishing levels of moral cowardice.
Trump suggests Khashoggi had it coming: "You're mentioning someone that was extremely controversial. A lot of people didn't like that gentleman that you're talking about. Whether you like him or didn't like him, things happen. But he knew nothing about it. You don't have to embarrass our guest."

If you’ve explicitly said you’ve denied regular teaching and mentorship to a student because they won’t fuck you, hoping it will coerce them into doing so, then whatever is protecting you is not tenure. Tenure protection does not cover that and teaching is the last thing you should be doing.

The debate over whether this is 'fascism' is a silly semantic one in which a small minority mean 'completed fascist authoritarianism' and the vast majority mean 'the people in power say and do things that demonstrate completed fascist authoritarianism is what they want to achieve.'

I hate the "wow can't believe you didn't know X was always like this" genre because a) I think a lot of people simply lie about what they knew, b) changing your opinion of someone in response to new evidence is good, actually, and c) it is often said even when the person did in fact know previously.

My most woke opinion is you must play attacking football in a 4-4-3 with inverted fullbacks, an aggressive high press, and an average defensive line height >= 51 meters.
"my least woke opinion is---"

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.

Give me your MOST woke opinions. We're bringing it back.

Combo of Trump’s lawlessness and the pardon power complicate the psychology. Deterrence requires more than warning of future prosecution. The people committing these murders need to ask:

Can I depend on a faithless man like Trump to pardon me?

What other forms of accountability might I face?

The discipline of literary studies is often very technical but radically under-formalized. In plain terms, there’s an aversion to naming the granular operations of research and teaching and this undersells both. I think the reason for this is mostly attitudinal and not otherwise substantive.

I did watch the Qatar World Cup and am generally not a fan of boycotts, but this being my country, I'm getting very close to boycotting the upcoming World Cup. For context, I watch about 10 hours of football (soccer) per week and play another 3 hours / week, so this would be a real sacrifice for me.
In the 9 months since Trump took over the Kennedy Center (and installed *himself* as Chair!), the venue has seen a dramatic drop in revenue.

Now, he’s offering the space to FIFA—an organization worth billions—FOR FREE.

Why? So it can give Trump a fake peace prize.
