The annoying leftie posters were right, 'Dubai is just a normal fun holiday destination' really was a warning sign of fascism all along
notable that if you tune to the right frequency, you can hear more and more "the UAE does it! (complimentary)" background music

I'm not trying to tell you it's not going to suck but this is more or less what the path to most of the good endings looks like:

1) isolated, unpopular president with few allies
2) entirely transactional and lightly committed collaborators
3) deeply committed domestic and international opposition

I can’t believe I have to care about Jimmy Kimmel. This is the worst thing Trump has ever inflicted on the American people.

Nancy Mace’s extremist attempt to censure Rep. Ilhan Omar failed by just one vote on Wednesday, after Democrats maneuvered against it. Mace claimed her censure effort was about Omar’s criticism of Charlie Kirk.
GOP Censure of Ilhan Omar Fails by One Vote After Democrats Maneuver Against It
The resolution was introduced by Rep. Nancy Mace, who has repeatedly attacked Omar for her faith and Somalian origin.

There is a fundamental right to bodily autonomy that is so ingrained in humanity that even the dead retain rights to their organs after death. Liz Bruenig can't understand this choice, believing the state is entitled to use women as incubators. It's not a moral debate. It's actually very simple.
The Atlantic should be ashamed of publishing this nightmare piece from Liz Bruenig, whose callous dismissal of Adriana Smith's dignity is one of the most shocking things I've ever read.

hello! She's making a very stupid point and REALLY misusing history to make a lazy, contemporary moral argument.

me & @lollardfish.bsky.social wrote about it just a couple days ago!

I guess the oddest thing about the concept of "gender-critical" is that gender literally is "society & culture telling people how to exist in their bodies in acceptable ways".

And that's what "gender-critical" people want more of, not less.

Every day, I think, “okay, there can’t be a better case study for how incoherent the government is”, and then they give us a doozy like “reverse or soften the winter fuel decision AND go harder on welfare cuts”.
“We didn’t go big enough the first time round. The costs are unsustainable,” one No 10 source said. “It’s a fairness issue but also a fiscal one – how can we spend money on the public’s priorities, like schools and hospitals, if all the money is going on welfare?”

Hard to see MPs agreeing…

This "debate" about who should use what toilet doesn’t benefit anyone. It doesn’t fix the underfunding of women's refuges, NHS waiting lists leaving women in terrible pain, mums skipping meals to feed their kids. How about we get on with tackling the real issues affecting women?

this fatuous notion need not detain us, but it’s maybe illuminating to ask what constraints the purported ‘deal’ put on the founders. In return for their wealth, would they say foreswear layoffs, commit to always growing their head count, or refuse to engage in offshore tax avoidance strategies?
By “free speech” they meant “make it illegal to dislike me”

A thing of real beauty
Cartoon from 2004, done mostly to give the office thesaurus an airing. Hearing later that he'd had a rough time, I was slightly worried that accusing him of owning a cattery which was merely a hollow facade might have been a bit unkind, but it turned out that he liked it, so I sent him the artwork.

Arguably the thing that people treat the most dismissively that would absolutely floor pre-modern people is clothing. I don't think non-historians understand how much human labor went into pre-modern creation of clothes and fibers. A single dress is the culmination of many many hours of work
