thread. correct numbers and data backing them come later, but this is the thrust.
One thing I learned last week was that if you don’t count the BS market capitalisation bubble of 7 “AI” firms, the US economy as measured by the s&p 500 didn’t go up 13% last year; it went down 7%.

The EU may be a larger economy already. We need to get our own O2 mask on, then start helping others.
Guess why there was no reporting of AI revenue?

I searched my email for openid and it was the one thing that came up, and it had my login name, and I could get it to send me a password, but it was no longer openid anyway.

I had an undergrad student do a GREAT project on it with PGG back about 12 years ago, too bad it was never published!

Breaking on MSNOW right now: the DOJ is tracking the search histories of Congresspeople in the unredacted Epstein files, and Pam Bondi is using those search histories in her Burn Book today.

This is surveillance of Democratic lawmakers as the review the Epstein files, and it is chilling.

The EPP (centre right for the European Parliament, kind of like US Republicans or UK Tories before Cambridge Analytica) just appointed a "former" Meta lobbyist to negotiate EU's revision of their #digitalGovernance, including the #GDPR. #privacy

You can joke about Pam Bondi’s ridiculous unprofessionalism all you want, but I’m deeply shocked by it: She acts as if she fears absolutely no consequences, convinced that there will be no more political power transfers. — This should shake everyone to their core.

Bondi crashes out over Epstein: "The Dow is over 50,000 dollars! I don't know why you're laughing. You're a great stock trader as I hear, Raskin. The Dow is over 50,000 right now. The S&P at almost 7,000, and the Nasdaq smashing records. That's what we should be talking about."

Although not the main point of this post, I'm suddenly wondering whether Germany, France, and Canada were hurt by Brexit a lot more than the US and Japan were?
It’s possible to reduce emissions while growing the economy. Many countries have decoupled economic growth from CO₂ emissions, even if we take offshored production into account.

You can see this in the chart for a selection of large economies.

I have been a little surprised that this shoe hadn't dropped already. The more that businesses become seen as extensions of a particular government's interests, the less that many other governments will want to have any relationship to them. See also the CapGemini brouhaha.

EU leaders face a clear choice:

Pursue a growth agenda that won’t deliver, reinforcing the false narrative that EU 'red tape' shackles national economies and giving Euroskeptic far-right a free electoral boost.

Or confront reality and make the hard choices we need.

Europe is chasing the wrong fix for its growth crisis
The continent’s old growth model no longer works in today’s world. And EU leaders need a plan that matches the scale of this shift.

She mainly lost because Trump leveraged the large number of white uneducated men that think (possibly correctly)gambling on crypto is their only shot at a house & family. Harris got as many votes as HRC, who won the popular vote by 3M. But Trump & Musk found millions more who hadn’t been voting.

If the US crimes against humanity were affecting “only” the hundreds of millions of people residing in the US I might (might!) agree a global recession is a bigger deal. But shutting down the EPA and accelerating rather than combating the climate crisis? Shutting down USAID? Colluding with Russia?

I’m sorry, how is a recession worse than the US collapsing into an “electoral autocracy”? I agree we are in for a 2008 style liquidity crisis, not only due to AI & also Trump disrupting the dollar for crypto but because China building by far the best cars. But concentration camps & surveillance?

Somehow I can’t believe the extent religion still impacts our politics, even concerning international consensus eg war crimes and crimes against humanity. I must be stupid.

Agree Germany’s unquestioning support of Israel is now problematic, but it’s also to some extent literally in their / our constitution, due to the Holocaust. But so are prohibitions against war crimes, for the same reason. joanna-bryson.blogspot.com/2025/09/wort...
