thread. correct numbers and data backing them come later, but this is the thrust.
One thing I learned last week was that if you don’t count the BS market capitalisation bubble of 7 “AI” firms, the US economy as measured by the s&p 500 didn’t go up 13% last year; it went down 7%.

The EU may be a larger economy already. We need to get our own O2 mask on, then start helping others.
Guess why there was no reporting of AI revenue?

I can't keep up with @simonwillison.net but every so often I dip in. Yes, sending unsolicited email with AI is just as bad as any other form of spamming. I hope this goes the way of google glass, (which I hope stays dead), but I fear weaponisation in the hybrid war. simonwillison.net/2025/Dec/26/...
How Rob Pike got spammed with an AI slop “act of kindness”
Rob Pike (that Rob Pike) is furious. Here’s a Bluesky link for if you have an account there and a link to it in my thread viewer if you don’t. …

I hope I mentioned @shannonvallor.bsky.social somewhere in the full work if that’s the pull quote global.oup.com/academic/pro... though cf techpolicylab.uw.edu/telling-stor... from a meeting we both attended in 2018.

AI feels personal because it reflects us back to ourselves.

A conversation with Dr. Joanna Bryson @j2bryson.bsky.social on why AI can sound human, how foundation models are built on human language and data, and how regulation can shape AI for the benefit of all.

My dad took @soundbookpro.bsky.social and I to see Blues Brothers matinee (it was rated R). He explained some of the Chicago in jokes.
Sometimes I forget how much I love humanity
In 2023 I became obsessed with videos of dads in cargo shortswaiting in parking lots during Taylor Swift's Eras Tour. So when she came to town, I grabbed a camera and headed down to talk to them. I thought it'd be funny. It turned out to be something else entirely.

This is kind of nuts, how completely accurately this new-age-sounding panel announcement seems to perfectly describe a big part of our present political problem space. events.ccc.de/congress/202... cc @helenamalikova.bsky.social #AIEthics

I haven't heard anything from anyone. I really miss peak twitter.

“Falling for”?? Siding with, probably knowingly?

I was at BHX, about to leave the UK but still this side of security/any possible border, and suddenly I had access to my bsky dms without age verification, unless someone corrected the credit card thing. On a Sunday!

But only on my phone — laptop was still banned.

It's the main reason I still tweet.
Zelensky lands in Miami. Not a single US official is on hand to greet him. In the language of diplomacy this send an unequivocal message of coldness and hostility. Compare it with the lavish pomp and red carpet shown to Putin when he landed in Alaska a few weeks ago.

Bullies are weirdly evenly distributed throughout humanity. It’s mostly the professional and power things that at least Anglosphere academics are almost encouraged to forget, maybe as part of the “war” against authority and expertise.

I wish they gave these to you every time you increased academic rank. I particularly tend to forget (took a long time to recognise) the second point.

I got this at the council of Europe parliamentary meeting two weeks ago Monday.

Amazingly, reaction times using screens while driving are worse than being drunk or high—no wonder 90 percent of drivers hate using touchscreens in cars. Finally the auto industry is coming to its senses.

(Generative) AI use and human agency.

Point 6 (of 12): there’s times when using genAI not accurate AI is immoral.

WE DO NOT NEED TO ACCEPT INACCURACY IN ALL APPLICATIONS. Many are perfectly tractable using more reliable means than #genAI.
