As someone who studied philosophy, its because a lot of mediocre philosophers are obsessed with 'Definitions', using words to explain what words mean. I've often said that philosophy is the discipline of filling out a self-referential dictionary.

There's a scene in Band of Brothers where Lewis Nixon is clearly spiralling after narrowly surviving his plane getting hit by flak. Only him and 2 others made it out the plane. Eventually he simply says "oh well, wasn't me" clearly not comforted by the platitude.
