to tht end, it's ESSENTIAL that we untangle sexuality & desire from objectification. things being framed as sexual, sensual, sexy, & desirable is not automatically "the male gaze." the male gaze refers to objectification above all else and the power fantasies of cishet men.

Today in: Nik attempts to futureproof their essay (and cover their a$$ 😂)
Text reads: It’s been more than ten years since Elizabeth Hanson posited “the logic of asexuality for narrative structure” to serve as a way for asexual readers and academics to engage with asexual identity in literature (2014:329; emphasis in original). As easy as it is today to cringe over her description of “asexuality in narrative stasis” (2014:329), I’m sure much of what I write into polyamorous narrative discourse today will come across just as cringeworthy in future discourse. Such is the difficulty faced in breaking new academic ground.

Text reads: If a reason for fetishisation was required, beyond making it easier to justify one’s actions against any minority group, perhaps the title and prevalence of the word ‘slut’ being used so frequently in The Ethical Slut might have been used as cause. With The Ethical Slut having been published in 1997—and therefore being present in all subsequent conversations on polyamory—connotations and fetishisation might have been excused in the same way generations of predators excused their own actions based on the garment of clothing a person was wearing.

As an asexual polyamorous person, I think about this all the time.

I'm even in the middle of an essay, analysing 27 polyamorous stories published between 2010-2024, that features the line:
