So, again, I'm a successful author, which means that as long as I can create books that do not lose money, the industry will probably keep letting me do it. Well, actually, I'm in a success superposition where if this one doesn't sell I'm no longer an author, I bet. (In the interest of full disclosure, I will say my editor made this note: 'Totally not true! We publish books by writers whose earlier books have TANKED all the time !! ' Which is heartening, but I'll also note that she didn't say they'd publish my next book if this one TANKS.) My first book, On Nostalgia, was published in 2020. In its first year, it sold 1,400 copies; according to BookScan, that's better than at least 66 percent of authors do, especially during the pandemic. At the same time, I was in the 98 percent of books that did not sell more than 5,000 copies in the United States in 2020. I made a $2,500 advance on my first book, which was not paid off by the first year's sales. It took me two years to earn any royalty; as of 2025, I have made $2,982.37 total from that book. The drop-off in sales numbers is tightly correlated to the drop in pay, for good - or at least explicable -reason: almost all of the revenue that keeps publishers in business comes from either the top 10 percent of new books or the backlist (that is to say, not-new books). Backlist typically makes up about 70 to 80 percent of overall sales, so that's a very thin slice of a thin slice to be dividing for all those new books that don't immediately burst out of the gate or start making it up on the back end. And usually a book has to burst out of the gate to have a chance at even making, let alone selling on, the backlist; much of the money subsidizing the rest of us exists because those books keep selling well after they are made. Nothing is better for a balance sheet than a line item with substantially lower expenses.
