While we wait for The Bloggies in February. Let's check out The Gloggies. If you don't know the "Goblin Laws of Gaming" it's kind of like an rpg design sub culture.

They make a lot of content for rules-lite fantasy roleplaying. Most of it is explicitly gameable. We might even see Bloggies overlap.

A Malay saying goes: "Siapa makan cili dia rasa pedas."

Literally: "Whoever's eaten chilli feels the spice."

This describes those people who get *very angry* when you make a general criticism, because in their hearts they know they are guilty of exactly what you said.

wanted to re-share an article i wrote in 2022 about the phallic and colonial underpinnings of what we might call the dungeon game---in fact, it's the third edition of a paper i wrote and rewrote many times, but only this instance i feels 'complete'

Re: last repost

I was having similar thoughts earlier ( since the whole 'colonist dungeon' thing came up again).

The dungeon as fantasy is really a kind of (ludo)narrative device present in a lot of games and literature that I think gets wrongly (at times) caught up in colonialist trappings.

PS: let they who do not hold citizenship in a state currently doing colonial war in Latin America among you cast the first "we must decolonise TTRPGs" stone.
Decolonising the Dungeon Crawl---

Like everything else re: decolonisation and TTRPGs discourse, this is a solved problem. There's only metric that matters:

How many creators from the colonised world are participating in and able to make a living from their games?

That's *it*.

Came across this piece of advice I saved for myself, on world-building.

Do you build a world like you build a doll's house? Or do you build a world at a person's size, for people to live in?

From Le Guin.

RINGS OF REMINDER

Here's practice I started in 2024, to balance out my severe insecurities: every time I finish a personal project and it is fully out in the world, I get a ring to wear.

Here are all the projects I've finished, in the last two years:

Post is visible, which is a relief. (Thank you everybody!) Apparently Tumblr's anti-porn prude-bot really hates skin?

This reminds me of a story I heard, years back, about the sexualisation of hands.

Folks seeing this: is the link below visible to you?

It's about the stuff I've made in the last (two) years, with a photo of my hand. Tumblr hit me with a "Potentially mature content: This post may contain content not suitable for all audiences" warning! WTF?

In Tabletop Roleplaying Games the idea of royalties is still relatively new; more of us at the publishing level need to be thinking about ways to undermine the existing paradigm and build to sustain our comrades and collaborators in the long term and give them the fruits of their own labor
My wife had a single line in Kung Fu Panda 17 years ago and still gets checks every few months. Most are way smaller than this, but devs get $0 even though the games we work on will likely be sold for 10+ years soooo yeah.
