P for "Please be patient with me on the road".

@chincarok.bsky.social endured my hang-ups and fears of driving for 17 years.

"P for 'patient', because you were so patient with me," I said.

"P for 'persistent', because you were persistent, and this is your achievement," she replied.

🌊SEACHANGE GAME, NOW CROWDFUNDING🌊

I'm writing an adventure for this!

(This is the main image in my moodboard for it. Big undead mecha going down to the beach to lay eggs!)

All morning I thought I'd failed, because my engine died at a red light and the examiner gave me a hiding for clumsy gear-shifts and clutch-work.

But then I got my test slip.

I passed! Omg I passed!

... the leader of the ship's indigenous crew.

In 40k, spaceships have crew in the thousands, and many are born on board.

"CHAPTER SERF" being exactly appropos a name, as these crewfolk are literal serfs---villeins whose lives are tied to the fief of an ancient starship.

These faction-leader / officer NPCs are also lynchpins of CHAPTER SERF's campaign.

Each have their own motives, quirks, and rivals.

This dude runs the ship's armoury: an upper-class manager type who's got a hate boner for ...

Buddy with the Voidmistress, gain access to naval armsmen and space shuttles. Bring the Enginseer rare tech, get access to Mechanicus-tier bionics. Stuff like that.

This is basically Imperium Maledictum's Patrons / Factions system---just simplified, and hard-paired it with the TTRPG gear list.

The ship is meant to be a microcosm of 40K's Imperium; the officer-NPCs roughly correspond to Imperial factions.

Do jobs for these officers, gain favour, spend favour to access gear and services that faction controls.

Here's the list you can shop from if you start befriending the Astropaths:

Encounters with the Space Marines will be rare, like encounters with dragons in D&D.

Mostly you'll deal with fellow serfs, and work for officers--- like Androno; the Enginseer; the clerk that manages the ship armoury.

Here's the entry for the ship's Navigator:

Androno the Seneschal is your boss. He sends you on assignments: finding a missing bolt pistol; dealing with a shortage of candles; figuring out why Drop Pod Tube B is blocked up.

CHAPTER SERF is a game where you play as the lowly peons that serve Space Marines. It's about the downstairs politicking / shenanigans that enable the Astartes' upstairs omnicide.

I'm writing an adventure campaign for it: you are serfs in a frigate conveying five Astartes to a drop pod mission.

ANDRONO OF ARISTEIA, SENESCHAL

Peek behind his desk. You see he has a third, muscle-bound arm where his penis should be.

Androno was an Aspirant. But sometimes there are errors—failings of the flesh. An appropriate word, blasphemous to think, is: “mutant”.

(For CHAPTER SERF, my 40k fan TTRPG)

What is your life and your neighbourhood like? Tell these stories to yourself, your friends.

Tell me you are being poisoned, and you go on living nonetheless---fighting back, laughing, dancing. The zone of sacrifice, unbowed and alive.

Tell these stories, please, so I know I'm not alone.

This is a true account of how I face the crises in my life, for myself, so I know how to continue---so it is crucial I be truthful also of vulnerabilities and complicities.

My father worked in oil & gas. My middle-class comfort and the refinery poisoning me---these spring from the same place.

Pictured is the CCTV camera we set up to record the emissions of the petroleum refinery that is our neighbour.

I never wanted to tell environmental stories---but the refinery's poison is just my reality. My "climate storytelling" is just a documentation of my life.

How do I resist?
How do you?

All stories comes from somewhere, just like all timber comes from a forest.

If you are telling the story of a forest a province over---why? Can't you find a person from that province, to tell that story?

And isn't there a forest where you are, whose story is worth your telling of it?

October 31, 2025 at 2:25 AM
The privileged / aristocratic's love of nature---a pristine, unpeopled nature---is well documented.

Think of the forest swastika.
Think of who owns England's grouse moors.
Think of the fact that the Malaysian Nature Society was founded by British colonials.

If all lands are peopled, and all places are neighbourhoods---climate destruction and collapse is about who gets to be sacrificed, for the sake of the more powerful.

A story about the environment is always a story of class struggle.

Do people of small towns get to be persons? Do minorities, women, the conquered?

Personhood determines whether you home is worthy of environmental protections, or okay to be sacrificed.

(This is a photo of e-waste dumped in Jenjarom.)

4/

Do trees get to be persons? Do gods? Do mountains? The electronic trash you put in the bin, that ends up in toxic fires in small towns like mine---are they persons?

Personhood determines whether your existence is disposable, or worthy of consideration.

"Miracles and Material Life" describes rice agriculture in early Malaya. Sufi mystics would parley with forest spirits; threaten, play them off against each other. In this way the spirits would be weak, the forest could be cleared.

Divide and conquer. Environmental exploitation = colonialism.

ALL PLACES ARE NEIGHBOURHOODS

Last night, for @newnaratif.bsky.social , I ran a workshop about what we need to think about, when we tell stories of the environment. Did some conceptual & ideological framing.

The point of this slide is simple: there is no such thing as a land without people.

Anyhow: come join the workshop if you're interested?

Some sloganeering, because I can't resist!

I am quite proud of this formulation:
"Good stories come from love (negotiation, endurance, irritation), not limerence."

I thought of it while on our beach, under a casuarina tree. A good story is like your love-hate relationship with your home town.

Here's a story about monks ordaining trees, to protect them from being cut down:

All geographies are neighbourhoods: full of persons, whether these be human or no!
