People can be extremely skeptical of images that do not match their expectations and worldviews, while at the same time abandoning all skepticism when images confirm their preconceived ideas. The problem may therefore lie less in disinformation and more in the erosion of a shared reality

We hebben konijnen overgenomen... ik weet nog niet zo goed hoe het werkt. Willen ze speelgoed? Is het erg als de een de ander opjaagt? Hoe moet je ze tillen?

Ze lijken verder wel tevreden

There is a simple reason why China is in the stronger position compared to the US in this trade war: It is much easier to create demand domestically in the short run than it is to rebuild the workshop of the world.

Beijing gives the middle finger to the EU just as the Commission offers an olive branch to China by suggesting it is open to boosting trade and investment ties. Remarkable message

We blijken al jaren een versiering in de woonkamer te hebben, omdat mijn vrouw en ik alletwee dachten dat de ander het mooi vond, en te beleefd waren om er wat negatiefs over te zeggen

Books I read this year! All highly recommended:

Whispering Wood by Sharon Shinn (fantasy, the latest installment in her Elemental Blessings series)

A Necessary Chaos by Brent Lambert (an excellent SF thriller/romance)

The Water Outlaws by S.L Huang (I put this on all my award ballots)

My Slate article about parents secretly not really wanting a village has breached containment, which is great! But I feel like I need to clarify that I’m not making a judgment either way! You don’t *have* to want a village- just be honest. www.cartoonshateher.com/p/the-villag...

As thinking at work about simple regulations vs flexible ones. I had a project where we spent a fortune to meet a fairly arbitrary emission number. An almost identical machine was just below the limit, so nothing was needed.

This felt wasteful, suboptimal, a problem caused by overly sinple rules.

The Dutch national debt fell to 43.2% of GDP in the first half of 2024, due to a budget surplus of €8bn. So naturally the new government is slashing spending on higher education, the arts and foreign aid.
