The thing about ebooks as a substitute is that it ignores two major needs of teen readers: autonomy (the ability to get a book without going through parents) and community (the ability to pass a book around to all their friends.)
I've said this before but I truly believe we could revitalize YA and kidlit overnight by switching to MMPB and paperback first. Kids want paperbacks! It is by far the biggest request I get from teen readers.

Generative AI makes scams so much easier. Plausible-looking websites for nonexistent products. Fake books, fake authors, fake everything.
Not fake like 'this is an AI generated review of a book', fake like *the book doesn't exist*. The author being interviewed doesn't exist, and nor does the book she's being interviewed about.

There's a shocking degree of overlap with cults, too.
One of the more cursed artifacts I own is the manual of the Mankind United cult out of southern California in the 1920's & 30's. They were kind of a precursor to Scientology. Same MLM techniques.

To be very clear, that lady in the NYT article is not making any money with her hundreds of AI slop books.
She makes money by *convincing people* she makes money that way and getting them to pay her to teach them how to do it.
It's an evolved MLM, and the NYT is helping market it.

We’re seeing this already. Catalogs full of books that don’t really exist: generated cover art, randomly generated author names. Hit purchase and you’ll get a generated document, in digital form or POD.
I don't see how self-publishing world survives GenAI. It's going to be an absurd increase in slop books with no reason to expect any increase in paying readers.
