On this day in 1879, Congress authorized women’s admission to practice law before the United States Supreme Court. Belva Lockwood successfully lobbied for this statute and was the first woman admitted under the new legislation. #WeTheMen

On this day in 1921, Congress reluctantly accepted a sculpture memorializing women’s 19th A victory. Congress relegated the memorial to the Capitol’s crypt & painted over the feminist inscription. The statue stayed entombed in the crypt for 76 years. The inscription is still not restored. #WeTheMen

On this day in 1820, Susan B. Anthony was born. She became a tireless organizer for woman's rights. Anthony recognized the symbolic importance of the US centennial and disrupted the official, male-only ceremony with a “Centennial Screech for freedom,” a “Woman’s Centennial growl.” #WeTheMen

On this day in 2020, the House voted to remove the 7-year ratification deadline Congress inserted into the 1972 joint resolution sending the Equal Rights Amend. to the states. The required 38 states have ratified the ERA, but the last 3 came after this deadline—whose legality is disputed. #WeTheMen

On this day in 1870, women in the Utah territory won legislation ending sex-based disenfranchisement. Utah women voted until 1887, when Congress chose the year of the Constitution’s centennial to reinstate male-only voting in the Utah territory. #WeTheMen

On this day in 1831, Myra Bradwell was born. As publisher of the Chicago Legal News, she insisted “that woman has a right to think and act as an individual.” The men on the Supreme Ct disagreed & held in Bradwell v. Illinois (1873) that states could exclude women from the legal profession. #WeTheMen

On this day in 1920, Idaho ratified the 19th Amendment, which prohibited sex-based disenfranchisement. Women in Idaho had voted since 1896, and two women were serving in the Idaho Legislature in 1920. Rep. Emma F. Angell Drake introduced the resolution in the Idaho House to ratify the 19A. #WeTheMen

On this day in 1964, the House passed the bill that became the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Women had fought to include a prohibition on sex discrimination in employment. That “sex amendment” to the original proposed legislation proved to be an extraordinarily important advance for sex equality. #WeTheMen

On this day in 1973, the first convention of the National Women’s Political Caucus met in Houston. In her keynote address, Shirley Chisholm reflected on her 1972 presidential campaign: “the time for tokenism and symbolic gestures is past. Women need to plunge into the world of politics.” #WeTheMen

On this day in 1964, the House amended Title VII of the Civil Rights Act to prohibit sex discrimination in employment. Although courts & commentators have often attributed this reform to men’s machinations, women played crucial roles in getting the sex amendment into T7 & keeping it there. #WeTheMen

On this day in 1915, the @nytimes.com urged male New Yorkers to reject a proposed state constitutional amendment that would have enfranchised women. The Times called the prospect of female voting an “objectionable and unreasonable derangement of the political and social structure.” #WeTheMen

On this day in 1973, the Gov’t Printing Office agreed that “Ms.” was an acceptable optional identifying label in gov’t publications. Feminists had fought for recognition of the Ms. honorific, which enabled women to present themselves in public without foregrounding their marital status. #WeTheMen

On this day in 1921, the National Woman’s Party had a suffrage monument deposited in front of the Capitol’s law library. The Party’s plan was to place the monument in the Capitol Rotunda. The hitch was that Congress had not agreed to accept the statue, much less place it in the Rotunda. #WeTheMen

On this day in 1921, Betty Friedan was born. She co-founded the National Organization for Women and proposed that feminists mark the 50th anniversary of the 19th Amendment with a Women’s Strike for Equality. Women organized marches on Aug. 26, 1970, in approx. 40 cities across the nation. #WeTheMen

OTD in 1913, Rosa Parks was born. She became a civil rights champion. In 1955, she refused to give up her seat on a segregated bus in Montgomery, AL.
