On this day in 1964, the House amended Title VII of the Civil Rights Act to prohibit sex discrimination in employment. Although courts & commentators have often attributed this reform to men’s machinations, women played crucial roles in getting the sex amendment into T7 & keeping it there. #WeTheMen

On this day in 1915, the @nytimes.com urged male New Yorkers to reject a proposed state constitutional amendment that would have enfranchised women. The Times called the prospect of female voting an “objectionable and unreasonable derangement of the political and social structure.” #WeTheMen

On this day in 1973, the Gov’t Printing Office agreed that “Ms.” was an acceptable optional identifying label in gov’t publications. Feminists had fought for recognition of the Ms. honorific, which enabled women to present themselves in public without foregrounding their marital status. #WeTheMen

On this day in 1921, the National Woman’s Party had a suffrage monument deposited in front of the Capitol’s law library. The Party’s plan was to place the monument in the Capitol Rotunda. The hitch was that Congress had not agreed to accept the statue, much less place it in the Rotunda. #WeTheMen

On this day in 1896, suffragist Susan B. Anthony revealed “what I think of bicycling.... I rejoice every time I see a woman ride by on a wheel. It gives her a feeling of self-reliance and independence the moment she takes her seat; and away she goes, the picture of untrammelled womanhood.” #WeTheMen

On this day in 1978, the US Post Office issued its first stamp honoring an African American woman. Harriet Tubman was an abolitionist & suffragist who freed herself & hundreds of others from bondage before becoming a Union scout, spy & nurse. Trump doesn’t want her image on the $20 bill. #WeTheMen
