Protest, Power, and the Violence Debate

As an aside, this is similar to those who argue it is ineffective to protest by marching down streets and causing traffic delays because it means I can’t get to where I want to go.

Sure I’m for your rights, but this just hurts your cause because I’m inconvenienced.
You say this like a gotcha, but is the purpose of the protest the self-actualization of the protestors, or changing some political condition? because if it’s the latter then it does seem like being effective is better than being ineffective, yeah.

I do wonder if part of this policing of the style of protest is related to the (post—Enlightenment?) tendency to assume emotional expressions of anger aren’t valid and change really only happens with reasoned discourse.
I don’t know the lore and until they’re brave enough to use a real name and photo I refuse to learn

I know I’m contested on this and speaking into the void, but a moral panic is not just people afraid of kids generally or people over-worried about the evils of something. There is a specificity in MPs and a stereotyping of a folk devil that gets applied more broadly by concerned people.

American progressives were faced with their version of the trolley problem last election…and they decided to say the situation the trolley found itself in wasn’t their responsibility.

Trolleys still gonna trolley.

Phew. Can’t wait for more legal scholars to tell us the illegalities of Trump trying to invade Canada without proper congressional approval. Really useful action.

Would I have liked the Jays to land Soto, Ohtani or Tucker? Sure. But they are trying to spend the money at least. They keep finishing second and that may be more a function of a “do not want to go to Canada” thing or “who doesn’t love LA” thing than money.
baseball’s second-biggest problem is that fully 29 of its franchises don’t actually care to compete for the best players and would rather do price collusion. its biggest problem is how many baseball fans are herb-ass scab losers who think this makes the 30th franchise the bad guy

THREAD of offers of guest lectures (via Zoom) for Minneapolis-area classes so faculty can offer their students a top-quality education while dealing with other crises

Seeing tons of extremely generous offers. I'll try to post 'em all here--please add your own w topics you can cover & how to contact
Finally, a note to the many professors in my networks: One other specific, small thing you can do from outside of Minneapolis is reach out to colleagues who are heavily affected (because of their own or their family's risk, or because they're very busy protecting neighbors) and offer a guest lecture

It really feels to me like the Jays have had an offer out to Kyle Tucker for a long time and he hasn’t accepted because he has no desire to play here.

Today I learned that LexisNexis has a $21 million data-brokerage contract with ICE.

I don't use it much/never preferred it, but definitely will be avoiding it.

Sure. I mean. If you feel like it’s important to clarify the history of policing in the US at this particular moment in time.

they didn’t leak it to make the shooter look innocent, but to make the victim look guilty. not guilty of a crime. guilty of having a visibly queer wife. guilty of liberalism. guilty of opposing the regime. they don’t seek to exonerate themselves, only to demonstrate who deserves to die.
In the video that the shooter took, which I believe was leaked to be exculpatory, he appears to yell “fucking bitch” after he shoots Renee Good.

These findings are important. I’ve been wanting to write on narratives to reopen schools. We missed an opportunity to reimagine schooling. While much discourse centred around parents needing to get back to uninterrupted work or children falling behind, there were still real impacts
I'm glad to share this new book chapter, written with one of my undergrads. Drawing on interviews during/after Covid lockdowns, we show that moms varied in how they approached remote learning, and that intensive approaches led to more burnout, leading to more interest in a return to in-person school
In Chapter 5, Kaitlyn Orick & Jessica Calarco show how mothers who adopt intensive parenting responded to educational challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic link.springer.com/chapter/10.1... @jessicacalarco.com

Fascinating that some people are criticizing Kamala Harris’ lack of words on Venezuela but not focusing on any other past presidential candidates (like Biden) or other public figures. Not qwhite sure why.

America doing America things. I think a more pressing question is what is the international order going to do about it. Clearly America is broken - it is not just Trump and Republicans. Democrats and the media are complicit. America is a threat to everyone.

I was in the US at a Pirates game years ago. During an inning break, the jumbotron put on two kids as the announcer told us they just finished high school and were joining the army. There was a standing ovation as these two were goofing around (as kids do). It was unsettling.
from someone who was in school for the beginning of the "war on terror," please. please please please. talk to teenagers in your life about not joining the us military. about not letting themselves be groomed by recruiters in schools. they're going to want soldiers, and they always start young.
