36 years ago today, 14 women, most of whom were studying engineering, were killed by an anti-feminist gun man at École Polytechnique in Montreal. I was a young graduate student studying physics at the time and I will never forget. #MontrealMassacre #NeverForget 🧪 👩‍🔬 ⚛️ 🎢 #AcademicSky 🇨🇦

On December 6, 1989, 14 women were murdered at École Polytechnique de Montréal…murdered just because they were women🕯

We remember them and we honour them…

We will not forget!

Femicide and misogyny continue to threaten women’s lives—and we must fight every day to end gender-based violence…

The legal Calvinball discourse presumes that the law hasn’t always been a fictional game without rules.

Of course, law’s power is in its claim to be something more than this.

The US really needs an outside entity or to draw electoral maps for them at every level. Use geographic reasoning that’s straightforward (hey a river is a boundary! why not try keeping a city as whole if we can!) But US exceptionalism has doomed them to forever accept gerrymandering.

It’s useful to think about things like this in numbers of tenure track professors.

$33M is 358 assistant professors. Or about fourteen percent of the total number of full-time faculty at Michigan State.
SOURCES: Michigan State is firing head coach Jonathan Smith, @theathletic.com has learned.

He went 9-15 in two seasons, including 1-8 in the Big Ten this year. (ESPN first reported).

MSU players meeting called for 2:45. Smith has a $33 million buyout (with offset).

As we gear up for the holiday season, I implore you not to talk with disdain about elf on the shelf as an example of surveillance society or as the panopticon as you continue to drop your kids off at school or teach at a university.

I saw that article about what value public libraries produce…and I’m I the only one that thinks it’s a shame they use economics explain their utility.

Like, is public policy okay?

Just gotta say as a trans person who gets death threats couched as "jokes", I'm glad that the rules are being applied this way. When mods are left to make subjective decisions about who is joking and who isn't, threats against marginalized ppl go unmoderated and we are told they dont violate the TOS

Only 4 pitchers have recorded a Pitcher’s Cycle — striking out every batter in the opposing lineup — in the World Series:

Trey Yesavage, 2025 G5
Randy Johnson, 2001 G2
Bob Gibson, 1968 G1
Jesse Barnes, 1921 G6
Trey Yesavage struck out all 9 Dodgers at least once tonight, a feat that Herm Krabbenhoft dubbed a “pitcher’s cycle”

Fascinating that fans are scolded we should be okay with athletes showing emotions and celebrating (they should do that!) but god forbid a crowd chants something to the best player in the world from a place of similar emotions. How dare the plebs get in on it!! Being at the jays game, I chuckled.
