It is T-7.5 days to Thanksgiving, and if you absolutely CANNOT BEAR to make an appearance at the Racist Relative or Overbearing Inlaw table this year, and they won’t take “no, you’re assholes”, it is Groundwork Time!
Sometime this weekend, someone in your house will feel awful. There will be vomit.

In a world where cruelty is standardized by a third of the country, please step up for retail workers and food service folks. If you aren't comfortable saying HEY THAT'S NOT COOL to someone who's rude, you can talk to that worker's boss to tell them how great the worker did in the face of rudeness.

This is an incredible essay on the interwoven pains of Long COVID, pregnancy, and writing—and coming out the other side into a life that looks far different than you both imagined and feared.

Thread quoted from the end so you get the whole thing

GenAI sells itself on removing the steps between initial idea and finished content. That process isn't a bad thing to be avoided. The process shapes & improves what you make. The 1st spark isn't better than the final concept
The bubble cannot burst fast enough. Even if it takes the rest of the world down with it, it'll be worth it to kill this stultifying technology before it consumes an entire generation.

Short thread: it really feels unfair that knowing your brain is pulling tricks on you doesn't prevent those tricks from working. In a properly run universe you should be able to shout "I roll to disbelieve" and have decent odds of that line of thought going away for at least a bit
I go off on this a lot but I'm fascinated with the evolution of HOARDERS-type shows and what they reveal about changes in disordered thinking.

HOARDERS started in 2009. Every person profiled was the same in how they spoke about their situation: I don't know why I do this, it's just how I am.
The bigger change is presentation, historically, these emails were visually chaotic: sudden colour changes, ALL CAPS, screenshots pasted at random. Classic signs of disordered thinking. Now they’re neat, structured, and grammatically consistent. The delusion hasn't changed, but the formatting has.

Good thread.
This podcast is purportedly about renting rather than buying, but it actually contains a fascinating story about two divorced mothers who decided to live together rather than live with a man. And they're happy as clams!

Of course it’s airborne.

This rejection of airborne pathogens reads like reactionary, emotional objections to the concept of miasma. That because miasma said infections were airborne, and miasma was wrong, infections must definitionally be not airborne. Which is not true.

Was reminded today that the literal meaning of "good morning" in Japanese, "Ohayō Gozaimasu," is,

"It is Early - politely!"

It's just "[polite prefix] Early [formal version of 'to exist' as a verb]."

While he may seem slightly unsettling, all Woody asks for is Cinnabon sacrifices.
But where did he come from?

How dare he blast an original cast recording while crashing out and make 14 year old me briefly sympathize with him?

And those students lost and continue to lose care-givers to Covid. Nobody's ever provided support for the trauma. And there's no support for students who are struggling with Long Covid.
Every time Covid and learning loss hits the news, people act like the only factor is folk staying home and learning online, rather than… Living through a global mass death event.

and like, our human need to be in community is a thing about humans that is so good and so important and so beautiful.

but there's a downside. our desire to be in community, not to fracture community bonds, often leads us not to listen to survivors. the impulse is SO strong to ignore/refute.

and on a personal level, we have to constantly CONSTANTLY police the part of ourselves that cares more about the comfy cozy status quo than we care about survivors who have been brave enough to speak up about what was done to them.
This doesn't apply to just NG; it doesn't just apply to entertainment or media industries. These quotes, from that 2024 post linked upthread, apply to the current situation & far too many others to count. Even if those files are fully released, we still gotta burn down the system that created them.
