What is the point of having a human rights lawyer in charge of the country if he can not bring himself to condemn blatant authoritarian land grabbing. What does it tell the country about fairness, justice and this govts priorities?

Absolutely this thread.

The lack of spine from this government on rule of law has let down the UK hugely.
There are MANY issues with Starmer’s messaging. But I always thought this govts best and easiest bet was to become THE government of the rules and fair play. Led by a former lawyer, lean into fairness, equality, law and order, justice for workers, respect for international law.

I am afraid to state the obvious but… the United States is a dictatorship.

The sooner everyone accepts that the sooner fight against the dictatorship can start.
The fact that the White House is punishing a Senator for *stating US law* is sickening and outrageous.

The United States is not a dictatorship.

And yes, our Congress's laws—specifically the UCMJ—*do* allow our men and women in uniform to challenge unlawful orders.

The Pentagon will cut the military retirement pay of Sen. Mark Kelly for what Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth called the Arizona Democrat’s “seditious” statements on a video telling service members they have the right to refuse to execute illegal orders.

Regarding Iran:

It seems that the time for diplomatic talks is over. There is a feeling that the outcome might be near.

This is evidenced by many factors:
◾️ Protests in Iran are growing, there are casualties, and the authorities are trying to shut down the internet

It’s sobering to look back on the run-up to the Iraq war—a period of unceasing chattering-class debate, elaborate official lies, media complicity, unavailing global protest, in the end a giant stitch-up—and have it seem like some sort of paradise of public deliberation compared to these gangsters.

So the crime, corruption & human rights abuses will continue (in Venezuela, just to be clear - though presumably also in the US), but the Trump administration will now be getting a cut. There's not much European leaders can do to stop this, but they shdn't act as though it's just business as usual.
"his [Trump's] plan appears to be for Venezuela to remain under the day-to-day rule of a senior chavista, with its democratically elected leaders excluded and its wealth controlled by American corporations." www.economist.com/the-americas...
Donald Trump wants to run Venezuela, and dominate the western hemisphere
Snatching Nicolás Maduro and attempting to take control of Venezuela and its oil is an extraordinary display of the new “Donroe doctrine”

Serious question. What percentage would you guess

Okay here’s an actual take: the fascist international is at war with the very concept of legitimacy.
Their messaging is so fucking incoherent. Maduro was an illegitimate leader who lost in 2024, which is why we're replacing him with his VP instead of the person who won in 2024. We did this to stop fentanyl, which is why he's indicted for cocaine.

We're also occupying Venezuela via Zoom call.

The “Venezuela distracts from Epstein” line is ridiculous because 1) many awful things happen at once 2) Same Iran-Contra crowd pushing Venezuela invasion are or were involved with Epstein/Maxwell 3) Epstein associates (for ex, Dershowitz) want Iran invasion and see Venezuela as a test run for Iran

US has been doing this all the time… for decades… albeit covertly. Can we blame Trump for calling a spade a spade?! #venezuella
The only difference between CIA/USA backed coups n the second half of the 20th century and today’s removal of Venezuelan president is that Trump doesn’t feel like pretending that it is always about a regime change in favor of US /US business interest.

A US indictment doesn’t give you the right to invade another country, seize its leader, or decide who governs next. Criminal charges and non-recognition don’t erase head-of-state immunity, this is regime change dressed up as law enforcement.
