A reminder: Tariffs are a regressive tax. The anti-Robin Hood.

Trump's current tariff settings effectively impose a tax rate on low-income households that's roughly TRIPLE that on high-income folks. That's not the way taxes are supposed to work.

Some charts for those who don't know the extent of the US public (and private) investment in research (particularly in biomedical research) compared to other countries and institutions. The destruction of the US' scientific institutions has global implications.

Is Bob Mould reforming Sugar with original lineup?
There's been no official word, but the Sugar instagram account is followed by the band's Bob Mould, David Barbe, and Malcolm Travis.

i'm kind of with will here. one of the *strangest* features of this age is that nominally liberal elites seem totally enervated in the face of fascism--meanwhile the liberal base is screaming our heads off. this doesn't comport at all with the standard story--
If Biden had said even one-tenth of this, he’d have been impeached and removed as a dictator. What is wrong with our elites? They’re paralyzed by their fear of looking unsavvy or biased against MAGA. They’re going to keep pretending everything is normal until the bullet passes through their face
How is this not a screaming massive headline across every news site? This is insane, a virtual declaration of civil war. We fought a revolution to not be subjected to this kind of tyranny

This video is fantastic and absolutely true. We're going to get to some of this later in the series on peasants but the time-labor demand of 'household chores' before ten seconds ago was enormous.

One 1900 report put the average food prep per week per woman at 44 hours; another 14 hours on laundry.
When people say "We used to drink raw milk from our own cow and it was fine,"

That's... usually not the case!

In families w their own cow, the mom usually boiled it before using.

We just forgot bc that's a boring chore that mom did. And who pays attention to that?

1. Make them fire you
2. Don’t go along to get along
3. Don’t apologize, have confidence in your own integrity and the importance of your role
4. Always escalate the conflict

Not true. Not conceivably true.

That analysis is a multiple-count data felony -- as Census and BLS warn.

Reminder: code review is not "to catch mistakes", it is a tool for understanding to limit bus/lottery factor first and foremost. When code is written (if you're lucky) by one human, having the second human abdicate their judgment to the machine is actively harmful to your team's code understanding.
also, the one i'm hearing which is most insidious is the “AI code/peer review” use-case: that's how you deskill people

but we'll be told that humans are still in the loop! and if they ever were skilled they are actively becoming deskilled by the “AI review”

should be obvious, but zero talk re: it

Tariffs are a regressive tax, especially in the short-run. The short-run burden on 1st decile households (as a % of income) is >3x that of the top decile (-3.4% versus -1.0%). The average annual cost to the 1st & top decile are $1,300 & $4,900 respectively; median is $2,200.

If tariffs on pharma go up 15% this week it'd be a *massive* escalation of the trade war—the US imports $175B/yr of them from the EU
