One thing that’s great about singular they is watching the gears grinding in people’s heads as they try to figure out whether I’m being coyly bisexual, flagrantly polyamorous, dating a nonbinary person, or all three.

In several of my classes, I teach about the complexity of “biological sex” in the context of vocal tract anatomy and the resulting effects on speech production and perception, and I don’t know what else to do now except double the fuck down on that part of those lectures.

I get a little amped up about some things when I teach about neurodiversity and language, but I try to include enough delimitation that even students who aren’t on board with anticapitalist disability justice can still understand why concepts like mental age are scientifically counterproductive.

Someone told one of my students that we don’t actually care about them, we only care how they reflect on us. As though that was some secret Truth, as though sharing it was an act of initiation behind the curtain of academia. And like… WHAT. THE. FUCK.

I took out the rubbish and recycling even though I didn’t feel like it, and I made some really excellent tofu and mushroom stir fry, and the world may be falling apart but for right now, in this very specific moment, I can eat this tasty food and rewatch Resident Alien and feel mostly okay.

I can’t stop thinking about the fact that two of my students doing basic acoustic research with queer/trans subjects this year just assumed they would need a higher level of research ethics review for that reason alone.

On the one hand, the basic facts of my romantic life over the past few decades embarrassingly supports the time my mother said “who would ever want you?”— on the other hand, that has *way* more to do with my anxious-avoidant attachment style than my trans body, and WHOSE FAULT IS THAT lol

21 years ago, the last-straw argument that ended my relationship with my mother was about a haircut. Sure is wild to see a constant barrage of headlines resurrecting all the worst things she said to me in the form of proposed legislation; I should probably feel some kind of way about that, huh.
We reported on this a few days ago, but I want to point out this headline because this is where we are at.
