It's not a troll. The MAGA braintrust, particularly Steve Bannon, have been hitting this drum for years. They see Greenland as the frontlines of a sphere-of-influence battle with China. And they've convinced themselves that nothing short of annexation will be good enough.
I think the Greenland threat is a troll. I think.

But it would sure be nice for some senators and GOP house members to speak up now and make it clear that an attack on a nato ally would lead to removal from office

The PMO has now released another readout clarifying Canada supports the joint statement signed by other European leaders that was released earlier today:

"The Prime Minister affirmed Canada’s support for today’s joint statement on Greenland by Denmark and European leaders"

I had an old post on Twitter about this. The US spends about 18% of its GDP on the social safety net and 3.5% on military. Germany spends about 24-25% of its GDP on the social safety net and 2% on the military.

Our military spending is not why they can have nice things or why we don't.
just grievances all the way down

good post though i think the PMO should figure out why they didn't get to sign on the Coalition of the Willing document beforehand

This is a solid analysis of how the US is violating the anti-aggression norm.

But - (all) norms are subject to violation. What matters for their credibility isn't the violation, it's the response. It's other actors communicating that the violation is a breach, that it's unacceptable.

some people love quoting "the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must." That was Athens saying that at the height of its empire. Few of those people seem to remember what happened to Athens the very next year.

The US commander in chief has famously claimed that Greenland waters are teeming with Russian and Chinese vessels.

According to AIS data this is bollocks to speak European.

There are 8 Chinese and 0 Russian vessels in US waters, none in Greenland.

It's not that NATO will collapse if the US invades Greenland; NATO is already dead. The Trump admin could not have been clearer about that over the last year. They refer to NATO as if they're not part of it. They've been threatening at least 1 NATO ally since they took office.

IR people who decry gender studies or arguments are fish refusing to believe the study of water is important.
kind of darkly funny that "gender studies" is the stereotypical "useless degree" because gender studies will help you understand a large and important chunk of the current psychosis in american life

The failure of our elites to hold Trump accountable for January 6th is as disgraceful as what happened on that awful day.

Since 2010, 35 democratic leaders around the world have been criminally convicted. Only Trump went unpunished and unconstrained.

Now he threatens democracy at home and abroad.

The venn diagram of people who defended "good Russians" as a bunch of smol beans who can't do anything meaningful and Americans who balk at the idea that we bear responsibility for our government is almost a perfect circle
the thing about being a "good" American (or "good" Russian) is that it really is on us to prove it, they don't have to accept it, and if that in any way influences how you choose to act or react, it kind of proves their point

In the same article, the Times uses scare quotes around Maduro’s claim that he was “kidnapped” (which he was) and then reaches for the thesaurus to say, without quotes, that he was “snatched” from Caracas by American commandos (which sounds a lot like kidnapped!)

Who is willing to fight the US militarily over the future of Canada other than Canadians? Who is willing to fight the US militarily over the future of Mexico other than Mexicans? When do existing alliances decide the threat is big enough to merit a response against the world’s only superpower?

I am broadly pessimistic of american "moral fiber" and ability to empathize with suffering of others if not reframed as some craven threat to their self interest like "and then virus kills you too" or "and this is your money being wasted on military adventurism", especially for "independents"

One thing I am increasingly sure of is that we must fight the US on any military encroachment on Greenland. It isn't even a fight we can dream of winning, but the US doesn't want a fight, period. Showing the willingness to bare teeth there also deters meddling in our domestic affairs.
TAPPER: Can you rule out the US is going to take Greenland by force?

MILLER: Greenland should be part of the US. By what right does Denmark assert control over Greenland? The US is the power of NATO

T: So force is on the table?

M: Nobody is gonna fight the US militarily over future of Greenland

It throws away decades of effort that was stunningly successful where we took it seriously, i.e. in Europe. A world that works this way is a terrifying place, and we and the Europeans somehow managed to replace it in a large and previously violent continent. And this idiot wants to throw it away.

I think it’s safe to say the international rules based order is looking a little worse for wear.

“Moreover, when NATO’s credibility rests in large part on American military power, what credibility does NATO really have when the United States is one of the security threats to NATO?”

I think of you're a *Senator* on the *Foreign Relations Committee*, you should have a sufficient grasp of the Constitution and the UN Charter to understand that this was war.
Did the Trump admin have legal authority to take this action in Venezuela or did they need approval from Congress?

Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., Foreign Relations Committee ranking member: “I think people are arguing both sides of the case. And I don’t think it’s clear.”

But at war with alleged drug smugglers in boats.

Got it.

One of these is a real war and one is a make believe war.

We spend a lot of time trying to track down the origins of this or that Trump actions--was it an influencer or a Claremonter, a broligarch? Where did this idea come from? Few people have time for such rabbit-holing.

That's why "neo-royalist" is so useful--and it meshes nicely with #nokings.
"In neo-royalist orders, hierarchy is the point. The purpose of neo-royalist orders is to develop rules that allow a small clique to maintain dominance in both material and symbolic goods. It thus rejects notions of sovereign equality and noninterference"
4/So what is going on? @segoddard.bsky.social and I argue the confusion is people using old models of global politics. This is not balancing or spheres of influence. It is international politics based on elite cliques rather than national interest i.e. neo-royalism.

It's important to note that Greenland is a self-governing part of the Kingdom of Denmark, along with the Faroe Islands and Denmark the European country. It is factually incorrect to call Greenland a colony (despite the history of colonialism) or call it controlled by Denmark.
🇺🇸🇬🇱 Stephen Miller: The real question is: by what right does Denmark assert control over Greenland? What is the basis of their territorial claim?

What is their basis of having Greenland as a colony of Denmark?

Nobody is going to fight the U.S. militarily over the future of Greenland.
