The slow decimation of kidlit nonfiction, esp in YA, combined with the collapse of verified/scholarly online sources is a bigger problem than many people realize. My options as a high school librarian are 1) pay tens of thousands for databases, 2) buy adult nonfiction and university press titles.

The free Encyclopedia Britannica is crammed full of ads and AI. The paid version of EB has had its rates nearly double and quality t y tank (including adding AI) in the last few years and many schools like me are considering dropping it. There are few if any viable replacements for World Fact Book.

I've seen other folks say at least we have Wikipedia except no, we don't. It's not a replacement in schools. You can't cite Wikipedia for research bc the authors are anonymous. It's a place to start, not a source in and of itself. Crowdsourced info is great, but it's not verified or scholarly.

School librarians are freaking out. The site is used a lot, esp for middle school. And nonfiction that isn't narrative or bio - such as country fact books - has been decimated in kidlit to the point where it doesn't really exist anymore outside little kid books, so no replacement for the site.
Killing the CIA World Factbook might seem like small potatoes, but it was a touchstone of curated facts in a sea of disinformation.

My actual job description is activist and here’s what I tell people in despair all the time: do not underestimate how much harm you can prevent by being just a little bit annoying.
This is one reason I keep trying to remind people of the power that we have. That we have *always* had. Not because I’m in denial, but because I know history. I’m no sophisticated intellectual, but I do know we’re going to win even though the bad shit is really terrible right now.
Too many people on Bluesky think that relentless expressions of despair are a sign of intellectual sophistication.

in any case I hope this is an eye opener for any folks who think having a lot of followers on social media (of any platform) must have it made. about 0.28% of my followers have bought and read my latest comic haha. sm is not NOTHING but it's also not that meaningful in the grand scheme of things
I wish people would stop telling me to "just self publish" 🥲 I do! here's what the last comic I self published netted me: months of work for 120 reads and a tiny bit more than one month's rent. I'm grateful of course to everyone who did read it!! but it's not an answer. it's just a way to spend time
